Guest guest
HI Cy: sure enough if you go to Maxiaids site and do a search for glucose monitors the meter that you mentioned in your post below is up there. It uses the Prodigy test strips so my guess is that it is a Prodigy meter, but it didn't say the brand for sure when I looked at it. It is listed for $89.00 and is also listed as new. Guest guest
Good grief Charley Brown.... Is the Prodigy any good? Even if it is marginal the $89 is a whole lot more affordable for those who have no insurance than the usual $500 or so. Thanks, Cy, the Ancient Okie... Guest guest
The Prodigy definitely works. And the speech is good. But one needs a sighted person to read the strip code which must be entered to calibrate for a batch of strips and one only hears the blood glucose reading once and cannot auditorily review readings although they are available visually. So the meter is a lot better than nothing and is certainly affordable but is not ideal for the blind--yet! IMO Mike > Good grief Charley Brown.... > Is the Prodigy any good? Guest guest
Hi Mike and Pat, Well, the Prodigy sorta reminds me of the ancient Type and Talk which was for the Apple II and other such relics. It was sure not the very best but it did at least allow one some verbal communication with the new marvels. The best was manufactured by DEC and cost 7 arms, 4 legs and various other vital parts of the body. The poor little Votrax Type and Talk cost only $350 and you could actually order it from any computer store. Hopefully the Prodigy will improve as time passes but, as you have said, it is far better than nothing. Cy, the Ancient Okie... Guest guest
Hi Cy: when I was having trouble with my insurance company in purchasing the Voicemate I received literature from a friend on the Prodigy. I seriously considered ordering it and showed the information to Bob. the reason that we decided against this particular meter escapes me now but I think it had something to do with entering the strip code, or something along those lines. But, I do agree with you that 89 bucks is a lot cheaper than 500 dollars is and if 89 dollars is all that someone has it is the difference being able to test and not being able to. the Prodigy might be the only meter that someone can afford and it does have its purpose. Guest guest
Hi, When I was speaking to someone at the diabetes store, it was easy to code the meter. He let me heard a sample of the meter over the phone. I asked him about coding the meter and he told me that it does speak while setting the code. I heard it for myself. So I don’t know what's the problem that people is having but I'll find out when I get mine some time next week. Guest guest
No problem. It's just that, unlike the SensoCard Plus or the VoiceMate, you must have the code value read to you; the above-mentioned meters have code keys which, when inserted into the meter, automatically ensure that it is properly calibrated without the necessity of a reader: Mike > Hi, > > When I was speaking to someone at the diabetes store, it was easy to code > the meter. Guest guest
Yes, the Prodigy is very blind friendly. The only thing not blind friendly about is that someone sighted has to put in the code key number. A friend of mine just got her last week and she loves it! Also, the strips are onl $19 per bottle of 50 strips as opposed to the $40 for a bottle of 50 for the other type of strips.
