Guest guest
Bill, Hmm, most interesting indeed. Crystal went to the foot doc last week b because she has a lot of pain which, as it turned out, is caused from a broken bone which she must had suffered several years ago. Anyway, while she was there she had Doc look at the bottom of her feet and he said the " rash " was actually a fungus. It is the same fungus which is in her toenails. His solution was for her to use Lamicil (spelling approximate) because it is the only fungicide available over the counter. The rest are fungestats and will not kill the fungus, only slow it down. For the toenail he said that she would need to use the Lamicil pills because no topical will penetrate the nail. Next time she has her blood drawn he will review the results to make sure her liver is functioning correctly and then she can take the Lamicil tablets (which are only available by prescription). The pills will get the fungicide into the nail and kill off the fungus. It will also stay in the tissue cells for a while and this will kill off any new outbreaks of the problem. HTH, Cy, the ancient Okie... Foot infection Although I keep my feet clean and dry and keep my sugars under good control, I'm now saddled with a foot infection that has nearly avulsed my right big toe and underneath which there must be some fungus that a podiatrist will have to observe in a couple of days when I go for that appointment. I sure wish I knew how the nail became avulsed, both on the inner side of the toe (right side) and along the back. That means the nail is just kind of hgnging on by the outer connection to the skin. Obviously, I have to be very careful not to pull the nail. And unfortunately now it's getting quite painful. Unless I find another podiatrist taking Medicare, I have to wait till Thursday and am treating the foot to epsom salt baths and an ointment that I used earlier this year for a lesser foot infection, not optimal but will have to suffice till a doc sees me. At this point I don't know if the infection is directly related to diabetes or perhaps there is something wrong with the shoes I am wearing, or maybe it's a combination of the two. The doc will have to give me further advice. That said, does anybody here have any advice on things I can do for my foot in the meantime? I do see that the left foot is starting to show the same signs of infection but it isn't so bad yet. I want to stop this process. It's probably been brought up before, but can someone explain to me how just having diabetes can cause a foot infection? And can this type of infection extend to fingers as well? I ask this because I am noticing some " wrinkling " or a slight " bubbling " of a couple of my fingernails that had not been present before. At first I thought maybe it was a reaction to it being much colder here than usual, kind of reminding me of how skin looks when it's been in the cold or in water too long. Now I'm wondering if this is related to that infection or to diabetes itself. I hate to get into the mentality of blaming everything on diabetes, yet at the same time I want to fight whatever infirmity pops up with the best knowledge and weapons I can muster. Sorry for the long diatribe here, but hopefully somebody has some constructive thoughts on this. BTW, on the Metformin and Glyburide, I'm getting fairly decent control of sugars but there are times when it seems I'm getting too rapid a descent on night time blood sugars, like down to 54, and then I wind up taking a glucose tablet to counter it, prompting me to not want to take that dose of meds at night. But then if I don't, my fasting will be higher the next morning. I had better control of this stuff on Actos when it was working, but not good weight control. It's always something. Guest guest
Bill, this sounds screwy, but it works. Soak your feet in apple cider vinegar. This kills fungus-but I would advise you to see the doc first ad make sure it is a fungal infection. Guest guest
, It looks to be fungal, there are black spots under the nail that my GP saw the other day before referring me to a podiatrist. The apple cider vinegar does sound screwy but will ask the doc about this. Hopefully the doc can put me on Lamasil as it would be the only thing that would get into the blood stream to fight this infection. Right now my foot feels very painful like I bumped it into something really hard or like someone is stepping on it, but then like I said before, the nail is avulsed and I'm pretty sure the pain has to be coming from that. Hope the infection is not in the bone, if that's even possible. It smarts. Cy was right, topical stuff doesn't get down to where the infection is so will have to take the pills if doc allow that. What I still don't understand in this vein is, with mostly fairly normal sugar levels and proper hygiene, how the heck am I getting an infection like this? I know that if you have really high blood sugar these kinds of infections can happen, or if you don't take care of yourself properly you open yourself up to infection, but with normal hygiene and care and fairly good sugar control, how is it that this still happens? I used to think these kinds of infections only happened to those who didn't take care of their feet (or their body for that matter.) What an eye opener. Thanks for all the input. Guest guest
Bill, A fungal infectin is different than a bacterial infection. You do not have to run high blood sugars to get fungal infections. Many non-diabetics get them too. The worse one I ever saw was when I was a student nurse. This guy, who came in because of a stroke, wan an ex-postman. Both feet were almost black with fungal infection-and he did not have diabetes. We had to put on rubber gloves and slather his feet with some ointment daily and then cover them with socks. Guest guest
Yes, I also have the fungal infection in myh toenails and I am not a Diabetic. I am going to give the Lamicil pills a try. I have had this infection for as many years as I can recall, well, nearly as many years. (LOL) Cy, the Ancient Okie... Guest guest
Cy and , Yes I wish I could just try the dang Lamasil pills. Hopefully if I can get an emergency visit tomorrow with a different podiatrist, maybe he will prescribe it and I can get on with some meaningful treatment instead of waiting till Thursday. Boy, the pain is unbelievable: Yesterday it didn't hurt that much but today, it hurts to put a sock on that foot let alone a shoe. This could very well be a combination of whatever infection it is, bacterial or fungal (my GP thinks it's fungal since it's black underneath part of the nail) and maybe a sprain or fracture, who knows what? Maybe the infection and whatever fracture or sprain are working hand-in-hand, I just don't know but need to find out fast. And Motrin has not helped the pain any, if that tells you anything. So all I can do now is try again to soak the foot for some temporary comfort and wait till tomorrow to see if I can get anywhere with treatment. I'll keep you posted. Guest guest
Becky, I also hope I can get relief soon. I know I will survive this just fine, it's just the pain is so intense right now that I can't think straight, but I know I'll survive. It does put a little crimp in my daily walks though. Guest guest
Bill, Motrin didn't help Crystal either. I was concerned that some sort of Diabetic Neuropathy had begun so I was greatly relieved that she only had the aftermath of a break. She had to go to Darvoset for any kind of relief but, fortunately, things are much better since she has been wearing her new " boot " . Doc said to try this first and then we may well have to consider surgery to repair the tendon which seems to have been damaged. Also, she is suffering from a collapsed arch and this is what has damaged the tendons in her feet. The fungus was just another " thorn " among the many things Crystal had wrong with her feet. Lots of luck my friend, I'll keep you in my prayers. Cy, the concerned Ancient Okie... Re: Foot infection Cy and , Yes I wish I could just try the dang Lamasil pills. Guest guest
Thanks Estel, So far my foot is getting a little better but ultimately I will need a doctor's help to get it healed up once and for all. I've certainly gotten a lot of good advice here and hopefully it will also help others who may suffer the same problem some time down the road. Guest guest
Estelle, Sorry your computer had crashed, but unfortunately these things happen. My wife's computer crashed last year, with not even a warning anything was going to happen. After we discovered the hard drive wouldn't boot anymore, I then had to take out that old hard drive, put in a new one and install all the programs like it was a new computer. Losing a lot of data was no picnic but it happens. My computer could have suffered the same fate but I'm archiving a whole lot of stuff on mine and waiting for a good time to make the transition to a new drive before this one gives up the ghost. I just need a whole day I can devote to the project though, and I haven't found a whole day yet to get it done. Bill

Guest guest
HI Bill and Estelle: I learned a hard lesson a couple of years ago about backing up my files when my old computer proceeded to die making it impossible for me to retrieve everything before its demise. I've been backing up stuff regularly to CD and consequently have a whole stack of CDs that need to be gotten rid of. I decided to invest in a jump drive in order to make life easier and save on so many CDs. I wish everyone with computer problems the best of luck and hope that you have them resolved soon. Guest guest
Becky, I've done one better for backups. I started to back things up with CDs but the stuff I have to back up is so much that I'd have a huge stack of discs and the time to do it would just be too great. A month ago I bought an external hard drive (250 GB) so I can simply transfer the files there and after I'm satisfied that everything's backed up I can then swap out my hard drive without that big stack of CDs.
