Back in 1999 my kidney transplant was giving me problems and I had pneumonia twice that year and they had to run some test and gave me that dye and my kidney transplant really slowed down but, then it kicked back in for at least one more year. I am so full of fluid now that I am sort of breath; they assure me that will go away as the kidney function returns. Looks like I will be here at least until the end of the week. Guest guest Posted July 18, 2006 Report Share Posted July 18, 2006 Of course none of the doctors will agree with me in the hospital, but if you have atherosclerosis, you definitely need to be taking niacin. I am not just talking about taking niacin as one of those B vitamins included in a multivitamin pill or caplet. I am talking about a therapeutic dose of niacin daily for the rest of your life. There is a tremendous difference between taking a dose of niacin in a multivitamin and a therapeutic dose to treat blood flow problems, lipid levels, and heart operations, stint implants and diabetes. The treatment dose for diabetics, heart attack victims, heart operations and stint implants is between 1000mg and 3000mg in total per day in divided doses. I personally take1000mg a day in two doses of 500mg vitamin B3 capletts I take one in the morning and one at night at bedtime. I prefer the real thing, Vitamin B3 that causes a flush. It is not for wimps. The flush tells me it is working, and it only lasts for about a half hour. Of course I rarely feel the flush at night, since I am usually sleeping when it happens. Now if you are in wimp sstatus, you could always take the flush free form which cost more around $6 for a bottle of 100 capsules in 500mg strength. The cost of this flush free form of niacin for a minimal daily dose would cost you If you take niacin, around twelve cents per day. you will not need to take aspirin to thin your blood. I only know it is working for me, a long time atherosclerosis victim who has had three heart attacks and two heart by pass surguries and one mild stroke. Had I only known then what I know today those heart attacks, heart surgeies and stroke may have been avoided. But what do I know, since I am not a medical doctor, who get paid for treating a problem and not preventing one. I have become a firm believer in prevention. I do believe that old saying, " An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. " I hope you get well soon and take my advice. It works for me and it might work for you. I was in burg with a good friend of mine from college that her husband died from a massive heart attack and she wanted me to come there and teach her on how to deal with a sudden loss. I hope that I did okay but, it was hard. I went to college with this couple and they have been married for 35 years, also he was a diabetic and had heart problems but, was not blind. I also had to change my dialysis to there for the whole week. Hope that the convention was nice, I listened to it on her computer on ACB radio. Every day I take one B complex plus, which contains all the vitamin B's, which prevents the build up of homocysteine in the blood and the plus part of the caplet is 500 mg of vitamin C. I only take these tthree caplets daily for as long as I will live. I take two niacin 500 mg caplets, one in the morning and one at bedtime and the one vitamin B plus caplet in the morning. The total cost of this program is less than fifty cents per day. I am very low. it is nothing for me to be sixty over forty and I will be light headed usually in the morning when I get up. It is a pain in the butt and takes from my quality of life. would this still be good medication for me? Vitamins are not a drug or a " medication " , and this is why doctors do not recommend them. Doctors do not reep any financial benefit in prescribing a vitamin, but they do if they recommend a drug. Just tell your doctor you take vitamins, if you start taking them. Check your blood pressure and keep a record of it. All the vitamins I have recommended are water soluable ones, and what your body does not use is excreted in the urine. In the recorded history of water soluable vitamins, there has never been a death attributable to taking them. You cannot say that about any drug like aspirin OTC or any drug prescribed. I understand you have a good exercise program, and this is why you have such an athlete's blood pressure. BTW my blood pressure is now back in the normal range.
