I live and work with myfamily so get to work with them. I don't have anyone

to take me to many concerts, etc. in nearby cities. I used to play tuba in

two local symphonies and sing in a city chorale but now cannot get to hear

any of these. My family doesn't care for that type music. I have a brother

who would take me every now and then to a concert but he is having to move

to a new jobnow. Some from our church are going to hear the Kiev Orchestra

and Chorus a week from tomorrow so that will be one concert I wil be able to

attend.

The only way I would be able to attend otherwise is to call a cab from that

nearby city since we don't even have a cab but that would be very expensive.

Debbie, I don't very often comment but these recipes are very much part of

diabetes and I hope they don't stop. I pass them on to a relative who is a

cook and not a diabetic and a friend who gives them to her newly diabetic

daughter. they are very useful and very much worth talking about. thanks,

armando, and you do a beautiful job. i for one appreciate it and if it was

not for work like yours we would become bored with our food and perhaps fall

off the way of eating that is critical to our diabetes, Keep up the great

work,

For many years now, I have been using volunteers, to drive me around for my

job! My company provides a car, and I have a different volunteer for each

day of the week, plus a couple of back-ups in case one of the regulars can't

make it!

I have had the same volunteers for a long time, some over twenty years!

Where is it that you live and work that supplies volunteers to drive blind

diabetics? Also what about beside job related activities like shopping or just

plain entertainment having some kind of fun. Is there any way to do this? In the

six years since I have lost my vision I have not been able to find any way to

get anywhere without a big hassel or a cost way beyond what I can afford.

Recipies are great and I use them sometimes don't gert me wrong. I joined this

site to try to get useful information about living as a blind diabetic. After 40

years of diabetes and 6 years as a blind diabetic I want to know how others deal

with vision loss. One day I was a self supporting employed person the next I am

labeled as handicapped and unemployed some how that just doesn't seem right.

hi Debbie,

I am a type 1 diabetic. I contracted diabetes in 1960 at 6 years of

age. I began to loose my sight in 1977. The loss has been gradual, and I

currently have no sight except for some light perception. I currently live

in Dunwoody, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, with my wife and two daughters,

ages 12 and 9. I have a Ph.D. in political science specializing in

political philosophy and the history of

political ideas. I am not teaching currently, but I have taught at

Oglethorpe University, Georgia State University, and Georgia Perimeter

College. I use taxis and MARTA, (Metro Atlanta Rapid Transportation

Authority) to get to and from work.

I use a Mini Med 508 insulin pump, and I use the prodigy glucose meter.

Note I

use Kroger Pharmacy for my pharmaceutical needs, and I worked with the

manager of the pharmacy and Rick at Diagnostic Devices Inc. to facilitate

Kroger

carrying the Prodigy Test Strips. I just picked up a months supply of test

strips from Kroger for the first time. The strips were prescribed by my

doctor, and my insurance paid their part without a hitch.

My A1C was 6.3 on September 7, 2006.

I look forward to learning more about you and others on this list.

Under His Mercy,

Danny

I live in Kingston Ontario Canada! No, they don't supply volunteers for me,

I have found them myself! The company just supplies the car!

I live right in the centre of town, so I walk to most places! I do my

shopping with friends! When they are not available to go with me, I just

call the grocery store, and they deliver for me!

Is there any public transportation where you live? Are there sidewalks?

Have you considered getting a dogguide? Is that something workable for you?

I moved 3 years ago, to be in a more central and accessible place!

Sometimes, we need to make a change in our life style, or location to be a

little more self-sufficient!

Is there a volunteer organization near you? Is there perhaps a school near

you? Sometimes, students need to do volunteer work as part of their

program!

Debbie,

Personally, I feel 's recipes are very helpful, as everyone knows

that good food made from good recipes makes for a healthy diet. I hope that

keeps sending them in.

My personal feelings about this are, with so many people on this list who

need help, why is it that any one person should feel that this is their own

personalised list!

I can do most of the tasks neccesary for pump therepy on my own, but there

are certain things that I do need help to perform. For example, I get my

wife to help to set date and time, because the steps to do this are multi

and varitgated, and I do not wish to try to remember all the integrals to

perform such a task successfully, just to realize that I cannot confirm that

I have completed the process successfully. Most of the things necessary for

pump therapy a blind person can, and I know some who do successfully.

Filling the reservoir would be a challenge, for it has a tendency to have

air bubbles, but if you are careful to go through a proven routine to rid

the reservoir of them, it can be done. In short, I think a majority of

things can be done by a blind person, but some of the pump tasks sighted

help is needed, perhaps that of a family member, a good friend, a good

neighbor, etc.

In my estimation, two developments that have revolutionized diabetic therepy

is that of the glucose meter and the pump. In my 46 years of being diabetic

nothing external to my understanding of what is required for good control

and determination by the Lord's grace to do it has had more impact on

controlling my diabetes than these two things. If I had my rathers, I'd

rather I'd had access to these devices in 1960, but I didn't. Even though I

have had bad things happen to me in this present temperal life, all of which

I deserve, I am confident of my eternal state, however, because I know that

God works all things for my good and that good is that I be conformed to the

image of His Son.

I don't think anyone feels this is their own personal list. Where would you get

that idea?

Recipies are great! but there is more to life than food.

I was just looking to find it.

I do have a dog, but he is a pet, a dachshund and not a guide dog. I really

like animals, I use to train and show horses. They are my favorite.

Hi Danny,

That's very interesting! I used to train and show horses too. I rode both

western and English. My favorite horses were the quarter horses, but I also

had a Thoroughbred and a Welsh cob. How about you? Have you been on a

horse since you lost your sight?

Hi Debbie,

The way to get people to talk about things when the list is quiet is to do what

you just did and post a message. Just because one conversation is going on or a

person is posting one thing like recipies doesn't mean you can't start another

thread if there's something you'd like to discuss. If you don't post it no one

has any way of knowing you'd like to talk about it. Welcome to the list.

Hi Debbie,

My name is Ruth and I'm totally blind and have been for nearly 20 years.

It's tough getting a job and I have two degrees and graduated on the Dean's

Honor list for both degrees. Keep trying though. There are those employers

out there who do understand though. Is there not an agency out where you

live that helps disabled people find work?

Ruth Hogue

Re: Talk

I can get around just fine without help except at night. I never go ut so it

isn't a problem. I did go to a rehab place at first but they weren't very

good so I quit. My issues are finances and transportation. Finding a job

with vision this bad is not something employers want to deal with. The last

job I had I couldn't keep for very long because I couldn't drive.

It is when the diabetes has affected the nerves in your stomach; your

stomach doesn't empy like it should, there is often vomiting of undigested

food-or at least it takes much longer than usual for your stomach to empty.

When this happens, it is hard to control the blood sugars because you ight

give yourself insulin according to the number of carbs you have eaten, tu

your stomach doesn' get the carbs into your system until hours late, so you

have a low blood sugar and then very high. Until I went to a

gastroenterologist and go tit under control (very recently) I lost all kinds

of weight (which I didn't need to do) and had terrible stomach pain. I 've

been okay now for the last several weeks-thank goodness!

Hi Bruce,

I rode western with limited vision up intil 1988. The event in which I

excelled was " pole bending " . My wife and I moved to Athens, GA in 1988 at

which time I was in the midst of a Ph.D. program. We did not have the

circumstances to have horses. The horse I showed for years died in 1987,

and I haven't owned a horse since. the story is too long and painful to

expand further. I won the senior pole bending championship at the Border

Belt Horseman Association in 1979, and I was legally blind. I could not see

the first pole until I was about 20 feet from it. I have a deep

appreciation for horses, a fact which my wife recognized. We spend our

honey moon on a working ranch in Montana in 1988, and we rode every day. It

was great!
