Hello again . It has been so long since I saw another post from you, I

thought you had forgotten about us and yourself. It is good to see you here

again, and check in frequently until you get this monster diabetes under

control.

I am now a type 2 insulin dependent diabetic, and I plan to consume 50±10

grams of total carbs each day. This amounts for me around 15-20 grams of

carbs per meal.

The number of carbs a person consumes per day varies widely according to the

type of diabetic a person is, type1 or type2, and their activity level.

If a person is involved in hard work or exercise program regularly, they

naturally will probably have to consume more. Doctor K. Bernstein,

who wrote the book Diabetes Solution, consumes a total of 30 grams of carbs

per day 6 for breakfast, 12 for lunch and dinner. At least that is what he

reports and he is a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic. He also works with

lifting weights several times each week. His A1C usually runs around

4.2-4.5. I believe he is around 72 years of age. I like taking advice from

a knowledgeable physician who is an expert on diabetes and especially one

who practices what he preaches. I would recommend his book for you to read.

I never heard from you whether or not you are a baseball player, so let me

know.

I also do not recall what medications and their dosage you take, if you ever

said.

Remember the goal; a two hour post prandial blood sugar level of 120 or

lower. If you do not prick your finger for blood, then you will never know.

If your bs is higher than 120 the most common cause is too many carbs

consumed or too little medication dosage. Of course these findings are

subject to individual metabolism. For instance when I do a specific

exercise program, I consume estra carbs just prior to the exercise or work

load to supply the energy needed by the body without running a low blood

sugar. Even this requires pre-exercise and post exercise blood testing to

see how your body handles carbs or lack of them. If you run a very low

blood sugar level while exercising, the body will compensate to keep you

from dieing, if possible. This is known as the rebound effect, which can

sky rocket your bs to a very high level, usually above 160 or more.

Eliminating high carb night time or bedtime snacks is a must for diabetics.

I no longer eat candy or bowls of ice cream before going to bed.

My last four A1C's from most recent last March to the oldest one is:

5.4, 5.3, 4.9, 5.1. As you can see, I have been recently consuming more

carbs than the 50±10 grams per day.

Glyburide 5 mg per day, yes, I remember..., those were the days. In fact I

took half a tablet in the morning and the other half at night to keep from

having a low sugar reaction. I always ran an A1C below 6.0, as I recall,

usually around 5.7 or 5.8, and my doctor said I was just doing fine. He

never told me about a concern of running those high bs levels, so I ate all

the candy, cakes, pies, cookies and my favorite a half gallon of ice cream

around twice each week, and of course I don't wont't to leave out the fact

that I ate popcorn almost daily with beerand regular Coke, my favorite

beverage. Even though my A1C's were quite acceptable to my medical doctor

at the time, we were both ignorant of the complications of high bs spikes

higher than 160, which consistently over time can cause diabetic

complications like heart attacks and even heart by pass surgeries, which I

have had two of both of them. Several years later I had to add Rezulin,

which is now banned by the FDA, but I started taking Actos instead to reduce

insulin resistance. For many years I took both glyburide and Actos daily to

deal with diabetes and never did learn to count carbs until much later after

becoming insulin dependent. The general fund of knowledge way back then

said that a type 2 diabetic on oral medications would become an insulin

dependent diabetic between 10-15 years. I became insulin dependent after 16

and a half years.

Glyburide stimulates the pancrease to produce insulin and Actos helps reduce

insulin resistance, which is caused by high carb consumption and high

insulin production. I have had three heart attacks and two heart bypass

surgeries, which I believe today could have been avoided had i practiced

carb counting and made sure I did not spike above 140 two hours after

consuming carbs. Of course this now is only conjecture, as the probability

that I may have been able to avoid, too, becoming an insulin dependent

diabetic by avoiding those spikes, which had to be a result of all that

sugar I consumed. I admit that I have always been a sugar addict.

I was physically active and skinny.

I believe Doctor Bernstein's book Diabetes Solution is available in recorded

format, but someone else will have to tell you about that.

: that is exactly the medication and the dose I started on when I was

first diagnosed. I believe you will benefit more if you add metformin 500

mg twice a day. Of course, you need to discuss that with your physician.

HI :

My nurse practitioner recommends no more than thirty to forty grams of carbs

per day. I try to keep my carb count per day to no more than thirty grams

because I have found that if I go over that my sugar will go up.

That's only 2 pieces of bread a day. The number of carbs a person requires

varies greatly depending on gender, age, and activity. 30 carbs per meal,

or maybe 90 per day wouldn't be out of the question for a moderately active

male, and perhaps for most folks who have some level of activity.

True. But he's on one extreme and the ADA diet is on the other. to

adhere to his diet takes a *lot* of work, a ton of home cooking and

purchase of relatively-hard-to-get items.

When you are a carb counter, you can easily get what you need. For instance

for breakfast you could eat three eggs, a quarter pound of bacon or a

hamburger patty and a serving of green beans and you will have about six

carbs. For lunch you could eat a big salad with lots of lettuce, some

tomato, onion, cabbage, carrots, and some salad dressing, say ranch

dressing, with cheese on it, I like the pepper cheeses, and a couple of

crackers, and you may have 12 grams of carbs. For supper you could eat a

steak and a salad with oil and vinegar and you would have another twelve

grams of carbs. For snacks eat a handfull of nuts for a 4 or 5 gram

snack. To increase your carb intake by 15 grams at any time just add a

slice of bread. Three slices of bread each day is 45 grams of carbs. If

you are a carb counter, as I am, I can consume the exact number of grams of

carbs as I desire, provided it is prepared in my house. When you go to

restaurants this will vary widely, since on slaw for example, I can eat two

bowls of slaw with a little oil and vinegar on it and it will not be more

than 10 grams of carbs, but eat it in a restaurant, where they dump sugar on

it, and the picture changes completely to a lot more carbs.

I always have to remember the fat content also of foods because I am still

losing some weight. I haven't eaten any bacon or not much steak and things

like that, but I eat a little more carbs than yu talk about because I need

to be somewhat full. Iff I don't have toast or whole grain cereal or

oatmeal for breakfast I am just dying to eat until lunch.

Protein is filling, and it has the same calorie count as carbs. Four boiled

eggs has around two carbs and a quarter pound of flank steak has around 1

carb. If you ate two or even four eggs and some steak it would hold you for

at least four hours. Drink plain tea or tea sweetened with stevia or

splenda along with steak and eggs and you haven't eaten hardly any carbs.

If you have several boiled eggs in reserve in the refrigerator, when you

feel hungry just eat one or two of them, and you won't feel hungry any more.

The calorie count for one gram of carb is 5 calories and it is the same for

protein. I would recommend getting at least some fat in a meal. A gram of

fat contains 9 calories. You need omega3 fat in your diet, since it

preserves and promotes good nerve development. Diabetics should eat at

least two salads per day topped with things like egg, cheese, tomato, nuts,

onion, olives, cucumbers, radishe, carrot, and most any thing else you like

like sardines, tuna and whatever you like. I love a big bowl of lettuce,

cabbage spinach and have it topped with all those goodies is yum yum. The

carb count for a big bowl of salad is probably less than 10 grams of carbs.

Fat is not a demon food unless it is a trans fat or a partially hydrogenated

fat. I avoid fats of this kind like the plague. Always eat real butter,

and not margerine, which is mostly a trans fat or plastic. Even flies don't

mess with it.
