Harry,

I'm afraid that gallons of any nationality are outside my experience.

Really, you'd think there could be some common ground on something in this

world, wouldn't you?

Cheryl.

I just thought some folks in the UK would know the difference between a

British gallon and an American gallon, and I hope they tell me how many

ounces are in each.

Since there are 16 ounces in a pint, two pints or 32 ounces make a quart,

and four quarts or 128 ounces in an American gallon, then I already know how

many ounces are in the American gallon. I just wanted to know if it was the

same or different for Britishers. Unfortunately, both Americans and

Britishers revolt when it comes to the metric system.

At least there is one common standard world wide for hours, minutes and

seconds. I guess at least we can be thankful for a world-wide standard of

time.

Yeah, I know about feet and inches. Most of the world operates on the

metric system with meters, centimeters and kilometeres.

Harry, A British gallon is about 7/8 of an American gallon, sotthere is

112oz in a British gallon.

,

Surly you jest. (LOL)

Well folks, it just goes to show that you learn something new every day...

I have never before in my entire life heard that a British gallon is

different from a U.S. gallon.

Hmm, wonder what a British quart might be.... Hmm, if I go to a pub in

England and ask for a pint will I get only 14 ounces- bummer! Well, I

suppose I will have to have a couple of pints so I can get enough. (LOL)

I already know that if I ask for " chips " I will get fries and if I wanted

" chips " I should ask for " crispies? " .

Well, it must be a sign of the aging process - but - I seem to recall a term

called " Imperial Gallons " used in Canada. Is this the same as British

Gallons?

Yes, I believe you are correct. Maybe a Britisher will chime in and let us

know for sure.

Hi Harry,

I had forgotten completely about the Imperial Gallon until something in my

poor wee little brain remembered folks talking about going across to Canada

to purchase gasoline because it was cheaper up there. Now, if the Imperial

Gallon is really only 7/8 of a U.S. gallon ;the joke is on them. (ROFL)

I still want to know if I go into an English pub and order a pint if it will

be 14 ounces rather than 16. (7/8 of a pint)

Now, to carry this a bit longer, does this mean that an English gallon of

milk has fewer carbs than a U.S. one? Think about this for a moment, this

would also imply that a gallon of English ice cream would only have 7/8 of

the carbs that we get here in the U.S. How about some English Toffee? (LOL)

Oh my, it surly must be getting late....Cy, the Ancient Okie...
