Guest guest
Hello fellow sugar addict, It takes one to know one, as they say. I was a type 2 diabetic on oral medications, and I always ran an A1C of less than 6.0. You don't know it, but I am going to tell you any way. You are playing Russian roulette. Yum, yum, I love those cookies, pies, cakes and regular cokes and lots of chocolate candy and beer. How old are you? You might get away with it as long as I did. On my first heart attack I was an old 47 years of age. When I got out of the hospital, I continued to eat all those sugars, since my doctor said my A1C's were just fine. Never mind that all of them were below 6.0, a lot better than what you are reporting yours are. Back then the doctors did not know that running high blood sugars was the culprit in my heart attacks. In fact I felt secure in eating all the sugar I wanted at least one or maybe two half gallons of ice cream each week, during a slow week of sugar heaven. The sweets continued and the A1C's stayed below 6.0. Still I had another one at age 55, and my A1C's still ran below 6.0 and I continued to eat any and all of the sweets I wanted. Well, I had another one of them at age 59 and I still ate all of the sweets I wanted since my A1C's ran 6.0 or lower. Finally, the oral medications would not work any more, since I had consumed so much sweets that it caused my pancrease to keep pumping out all of that insulin, that I developed one hell of a case of insulin resistance, and finally I started running an A1C of 7.2 and a lot higher. My pancrease had played out. Now it dawned on me. Maybe peaking all of those blood sugar levels was not so good an idea. Now I am insulin dependent and lucky to be alive. One third to one half of all heart attack victims do not survive their first heart attack. If you keep playing with that sweet rattle snake, one day it is going to bite you. Refined carbohydrates are not good for anyone, especially when eaten and drank regularly. I would safely say for a diabetic, it is a definite no no. Guest guest
In my opinion there is very little difference in raising my blood sugar level with a refined carbohydrate like a piece of bread, which is mostly made with flour, a refined carbohydrate or a piece of candy containing the same number of grams of carbs. Of course whole wheat bread or whole grain flour is better for you, since it contains more vitamins, minerals and enzymes. What is a refined carbohydrate? Some examples follow: all sugar products and all flour products like bread, pasta sphagetti, pies cakes, cookies, fruit juices, corn meal, ice cream, and practically any thing you would like to eat. If it is white, like milk, rice, potatoes and so forth, it is probably not good for a diabetic. I still eat candy from time to time, but not often. I just love one of those small chocolate bars that contains around 5 or 6 grams of carbs. The only thing I don't like about them is they are really small, but then I can only eat one of them any how. Let It Bleed, No I'm not going to talk about that excellent Rolling Stones album released in 1970, but for some reason I couldn't get a good sugar test this morning. I couldn't get my finger to bleed enough to get enough blood for the strip on my accucheck voicemate. Any suggestions? This isn't the first time this has happened. I just gave up after a half hour of trying in shure frustration. And besides breakfast was ready. Take care. If I was as sure of God as I am about the ground beneath my feet, how often would I think of God?

Guest guest
I bet you can do it Ken! Just one step at a time. There are really good cookies that are low carb you can get from: josephslightcookies.com. There is only 15 grams of carbs in 4 cookies. They are crunchy and come in a variety of flavors. Guest guest
IMO the difference between refined and nonrefined carbs is that the former have had most or all of the fiber removed. Hence, there is nothing to mediate or slow down the absorption of the energy in them into the bloodstream in the form of glucose. Guest guest
You are right about that Harry. But it is much harder, in my opinion, for someone on medication instead of insulin to get their BG down after eating too much sugar. And, as you said, other types of carbs are better nutritionally, for you than refined sugars. But, darn it, we all love those refined sugars occasionally! Guest guest
Learn to count carbs. Consume no mor than 30 grams of carbs at a meal. One piece of pie or three cookies are more than that. One regular candy bar has more than that, too. Learn to love raw vegetables like carrots, celery, cabbage, broccoli and others. Cheeses, which have little to almost no carbs, make a good snack. A handful of nuts contains a small number of carbs. When I eat a single piece of bread now a days, which it only contains 15 grams of carbs, it is almost like eating a piece of cake. I know about sugar addiction, and I know it is a habit. Just form some new habits. Guest guest
Every time you pick up a refined carbohydrate just say over and over to yourself, " This is poison to my system. " You may eventually come to believe it. Guest guest
No, it doesn't matter, Ken. It is just that in reality, 6.5 is running a little high-no matter what caused it! (P.S. I know that a 6.5 due to a piece of pie is probably much enjoyable than a boring piece of wheat bread-and once in a while is probably okay-but daily keeps your total A1C level too high) Re: Need some help re sweet stuff; Ok, thanks. Up here in canada, some are thinking that 6.5 and under is ok. Tell me; Is there any difference between running up a 6.5 glucos count by either eating a piece of pie, or alternativelydoing the same count by eating say some bread that amounts up to the same 6.5 or under, as far as carbs goes?? Let It Bleed, No I'm not going to talk about that excellent Rolling Stones album released in 1970, but for some reason I couldn't get a good sugar test this morning. Guest guest
Count those carbs and test two hours after eating. If you can always or over 90% of the time or more, get a mole reading of 6.67 or less, then you will obtain an A1C of 5.5 or lower after three or four months of doing so. If you run a higher mole reading than 6.67, then you are either eating too many carbs or not taking enough medication. Guest guest
Hary, I know this was addressed to Ken but it sure is a wake-up call to all of us just starting out with diabetes. sometimes it se3ems that a little sugar here or there really doesn't matter. I'm so sorry you had to go through all that you did in your life but happy you are shring it here, as I think we can all read this letter whenever we get the old ideas in the brain. thanks. Vicki " Do not love the world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but they are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. Guest guest
Unless a person is a total psychopath, who has no guilt, then it is a good sign to have a little guilt, since this guilty feeling signals the person that hey are doing something wrong. So, if eating pies, cakes and cookies and ice cream sends a guilty feeling to you, pay attention to that feeling. It is telling you that you are doing something that you should know better not to do. Guest guest
Hi Harry: Be careful of the supposed low carb pastas, too. Bob read some labels and the pastas that are supposed to be low carb have as many carbs as the regular stuff. If I want chocolate I do sugar free and limit myself to one small piece because of the calories, carbs, and what over eating sugar free stuff can do to the digestive system. Guest guest
Becky, You are right on with the " low carb " , " low sugar " , " sugar free " and other such labels Madison Avenue has come up with. The other killer is " Diatetic " which is easily (far too easily) confused with " Diabetic " . Crystal checked the Viva milk because it was supposed to be " low carb " . Hmm, for whatever reason the carb count was exactly the same as the real thing... " no sugar added " is also a real blind sider because what the really mean is that they have not added the " processed " sugars to it. I could contain any amount of the " natural " sugar such as Fructose or whatever. Interestingly also is the fact that Great Value peanut butter had fewer carbs than the " natural " peanut butter. Oh well, as Harry, myself and other good folks have said " If it tasts good spit it out because it probably is not good for you " - (LOL) Cy, the Ancient Okie... Guest guest
HI Cy: You are absolutely right here. Another false one that they have out there is " no cholesterol added. " While they are admitting that they don't add cholesterol to the product it might still be positively loaded with cholesterol that is naturally found in the product. My poor mother-in-law used to believe that if the label said that there was no cholesterol added that it meant that the product didn't have any cholesterol and therefore was all right for her to eat. I have indeed heard people confuse " dietetic " with " Diabetic " and there are most definitely quite different. Becky and Cassidy, Pilot Dog, Poodle maddpoodle27@...
