We have a flat rate of pay for contingent status PT's ($33.00 hr) and ($31.00)

OT's. This rate is paid regardless of the day of the week. For anyone working

weekends, we pay $1.00 an hr on top of their base pay. This is true for

contingent status employees too. So when our full-time therapists work weekends,

they get $1.00 an hr more.

Our PT and OT staff work one weekend a month and in turn get two other days off

in the same pay period. They are accepting of this schedule because they know

that hospitals operate 7 days a week. That's not to say that they enjoy working

weekends but they do understand why it is this way.

p.s.- I'm referring to a 350-bed hospital in Michigan (Detroit area).

Can anybody share what the weekend differential is that they pay therapists? I

have seen a lot of interest in this subject lately on the listserve. We are

having more and more problems trying to find people that want to work weekends,

and our regular staff that rotates thru weekends are unhappy about the number of

weekend days they work. A pay differential on the weekend days might help with

staff satisfaction issues related to weekend expectations.

The rotation schedule for our PT's is two months Tuesday - Friday followed

by two months Friday - Monday (4 - 10's). Since they belong to a union,

the contract states they will receive an additional 50 cents per hour for

the hours worked on the weekends.

I work PRN at a locat hospital and besides the regular salary they pay a bonus

of 50 dollars for working over 6 hours and 25 dollars for under 6 hours on the

weekend. This is for regular staff and PRN staff, PT, and PTA same

Our dept. faced same problem a year ago. Response was to create a

designated " weekender " position. There is a higher compensation rate (~

$5.00 more per hour compared to registry/PRN therapists, who are also

higher than regular hour therapists), but " weekenders " are required to

commit to working one full shift (Saturday or Sunday) every weekend.

Was difficult to attract staff wanting hours every weekend. In fact,

after one year of recruiting, we have only one therapist who is a

" weekender " exclusively. Two other therapists work part time Mon-Fri,

and are in the " weekender " program as an alternate job description.

This program is offered to therapists and assistants of all disciplines.

The program has worked well for the few people we have added to the

program. Being able to rely on even just a few therapists to work every

weekend has made scheduling much easier.

FYI, we are a 128 bed hospital in the far west suburbs of Chicago.

Good luck.

We made a decision several years ago to create dedicated weekend

positions for our inpatient division. There were at least two reasons.

First, working weekends is a big disatisfier for staff and caused us to

have continual turn over with our staff transferring to the outpatients

division or other OP clinics in town. Having dedicated weekend workers

has reduced our weekend rotation frequency and improved our employee

retention rate. Secondly, rotating therapists into a weekend schedule

reduces overall patient care continuity. When we are able to rotate the

primary therapists into the weekend less often, that means they are off

during the week less often, which in turns means that we have increased

continuity M-F.

We structured our weekend positions so that the weekend therapist either

works F-Su or Sa-M for three 8-hour days (24 hrs. per week). This not

only gives us consistent Sa and Su coverage, but also gives us

additional coverage on the two days (F and M) that other therapist most

frequent request as vacation days. The weekend therapists are

considered to be part time employees and receive their benefits at the

part time rate, however they receive a large hourly differential which

essentially causes their paycheck to be the equivalent of a 40 hour week

even though they only work a total of 24 hours. So they are paid like

full time workers, but get 4 days off every week. The only catch is

that they have to work EVERY weekend. We do occasionally give them

vacation time, but for the most part they are expected to be here every

single weekend.

These positions have really been in demand and have been surprisingly

easy to fill. Stay and home moms love the position in particular

because they can earn the equivalent of full time pay, but only need

child care one day out of the week. It's worked out well for us and

seems to be a pretty good way to spend our FTEs when you consider the

benefits of staff retention and patient care continuity.
