Guest guest Posted February 17, 2002 Report Share Posted February 17, 2002 Sue, Before this last hiccup with , he was on to it enough to start learning to hold the stix in the stream of urine himself, (he still sits down, because of my fear of him cracking his head on the bowl during a drop attack!) and then count to 15 before he showed me. We were trying to instil some independence in him ready for starting school. However, due to his 'not really there' cognitive state at the mo, we are back to holding a container for him to go in. He stands, we catch!!! Hill Checking for ketones Hi all. I decided to start toilet training Jack just after Christmas and within a month he was telling me when he needed to go, I couldn't believe he had taken to it so well. We have a little seat with a potty in it (he's almost 4 years old and too big for the little potties and the toilet was too scary for him), but we have discovered that taking him out is a pain because no one has a "toilet" like his. Anyway, I am proud to say that yesterday he decided that he wanted to be a big boy and sit on the toilet. I have just realised 5 minutes ago that I haven't checked his ketones since then. He only goes about 3 times a day so I usually check every one. How does everyone else get a urine sample? Can Jack do this himself? I don't really trust not to spill it when bringing it back out of the toilet bowl. Have you got tried the toilet seat 'insert' on the loo, or is this what he is using We used to take it with us to friends' places, but it is a bit big to take out shopping etc!!! We just tell to make sure he let's us know when he is going, but that is so infrequent at the moment, that it is us that always takes him. He seems to have developed a urinary retention problem (similar to Jenn's Mike), I am suspecting the new med, nitrazepam, he is now on. Hill Checking for ketones Hi all. This is what they use in the hospital when they want a urine sample. It's plastic and just fits in the seat of the toilet. That way, when I want to check 's ketones, I just slip that in, she goes right in it, I dunk the stick, dump the rest and clean the " hat " ! Just seemed like it preserved her privacy without me in there sticking the stick in her urine stream! I keep forgetting to ask for one when I visit the Dr. They would probably give you one for free if the Dr. is in a hosptial clinic. They use throw aways. " I had asked at the doc's office and they didn't have them. I would have had to have asked at the hospital and you know how that goes! I got it at Osco (one of ours has a medical supply section). He's on no drugs and he does drink a fair bit of diet sprite and water (half and half). He also eats 2 thriftee ice-blocks a day. We have put the seat in the toilet for him and a stool under his feet and he seems perfectly steady. I am going to buy another seat to live in the car for when we are out. I think I'll do as others have said and get a container to catch the urine, maybe only once a day so he doesn't get used to it being there. Guest guest Posted February 17, 2002 Report Share Posted February 17, 2002 Mike's problem is linked with the clonazapam he is currently on (I was wondering about this but wasnt really sure til the urologist looked it up). It sounds like clonazapam and nitrazepam are similar medications. The urologist is asking the neuro to change the med. We are already trying to get him off the dilantin and the pheno so it looks like we have another med withdrawl to worry about now. We see the neuro on March 4 so I will find out what she thinks about it all then.
