Zovirax for cold sores?

Hi all,

's pediatrician wanted me to find out from you all, if Zovirax would be ok to use for 's cold sores? I had told him that she is super sensitive, seizure wise, to many things, so he said he'd wait to hear from me before prescribing it.

He felt it would heal the cold sores faster than Lysine, but I could continue with the lysine ointment if that is what we have to do...

Thanks for your help!

Hmmm. . . well, I've used Zovirax myself, but I

probably wouldn't use it for . . . can't give you

a good reason other than trying to keep

drugs/chemicals out of her system. Can tell

when one's coming on? It's always been my

understanding that you need to catch it the instant

you feel tingling, otherwise it won't do any good

except possibly heal it faster. Remember, though,

that even though a drug is masking the symptom, the

virus is still in her system. So, you might not see

as many cold sores, but that may or may not affect her

seizures -- if in fact the virus is at the root. Make

sense?--D

Kandy,

You can get a form of Zovirax that can be taken as a preventative med

on a daily basis. I've got Avirax and another is AltiAcyclovir ( I

think thats the name can't remember for sure) but they can be taken

daily to prevent any eruptions before even a tingle so I think it

keeps the virus under raps completley. However, it is a virus that

stays in your body for life, it doesn't go away, it just lies

dormant. If she's having a lot of sores it may be worth a try. It

one of those vicious circles were she gets the sores which increase

the siezures which add stress to her life which causes another

outbreak and so on. It might break the cycle if she were to take for

a while and then maybe just at more stressful times. That's what I

do. I hardly ever had an outbreak until Gillian's siezures started

then it was one after another from the stress so I started taking the

Avirax daily for a while. Now if things get really stressful again I

start taking it cause I know what fallows the stress. I'm not a big

advocate of drugs but sometimes I guess they are an alternative.

Anyways, good luck and take care.
