glass,

When I get a UTI now they do a catheter sample. Regular samples are

easy to contaminate and then they can't find the bacteria. You may

need to see a urologist and have a catheter sample done.

Have you had a cystoscopy with hydrodistention done? They put you to

sleep then fill your bladder with water (this is very painful as it

is fuller than you have ever felt so they put you to sleep). This is

the only way to be sure if you have or don't have Interstital

Cystitis which can also include vaginal burning and swelling. Just

having a scope put into the bladder is not enough to rule out

Interstitial Cystitis. Many with IC are findout out it is an

uncommon bacteria called enteroccocus which labs to not look for.

You have to ASK for them to look for it as it is a whole different

procedure. Same with yeast---you have to ask them to grow the yeast

culture and see if you have yeast in your bladder.

The bladder has the same tissue makeup as the vulva so when one is

inflamed the other will get that way as well. Also---whatever is in

your urine that is causing you to burn in the bladder/urethra--spills

all over the vulva too. For this you can keep a squirt bottle of

water nearby and rinse after urination.

One thing to try is to use antiacids. Or 1 tsp of baking soda in a

glass of water but plug your nose---it tastes nasty! My doctor gave

this to me for bladder infection relief and if you have IC---it will

help with that too as acid foods cause flares. Max of 2 times a day

though!!! It will change the pH of your urine so it burns less and

the bacteria can't survive as well.

Have you been checked for all the sexually transmited diseases?

A current yeast infection? All vaginal infections can cause urethral

pain including yeast and bacterial vaginosis.

Allergies---can cause skin to be irritated and swell---cotton fabric

is an allergen for some. I know......you were never allergic before

so why would it change......that's simple...hormones and aging.

There are millions of people out there that never had an allergy that

will suddenly become allergic to something they eat or wear or use.

It just happens. The longer we are alive the more pollutants and

outside forces our body has to deal with. I used to be able to use

sulfa meds with no problem. 2 years ago I became allergic to it. It

happens. Have you seen an allergist or dermatologist?

daphne,

I had exactly the same thing as you, and it happened to me when I was in hospital! Nightmare! You must be unbelievably uncomfortable. When I was in hospital this urinary feeling came on me, very severe but maybe not as painful as you. I was tested and it came up negative! Doctors just did not seem to take me seriously or want to discuss it - maybe they're afraid to admit I got from their hospital. Getting up continuously through the night is awkward in hospital as it wakes everyone up.

Eventually it got less. It seemed to happen when I was very constipated and had just started taking Citalopram an SSRI Anti-depressant. For a while I had spasms in urinary area at every loud noise and getting to sleep was a nightmare. Urinary feeling has gone but it now transpires I have possible thrush now from cream I've being using, constantly wet etc on my peeling skin between my legs.

Hope you get some relief from soon. My thing gradually subsided which is unbelievable really as it was so bad and quite frightening, goodness knows what it was! Sometimes the urinary area becomes irritated/bruised just inside and causes pain and urgency, but heals up.

How can they say to you that you are 'perfectly normal', they just don't listen! Sometimes I feel my doctor just doesn't want to deal with it. They just don't understand how agonising urinary problems are.

what is going on??

Yesterday morning I woke up feeling that awful burning in my urinary tract and i knew I was in trouble, going pee felt like passing shards of glass, i called the doctor, then called my husband distraught and bawling because i have reached the end of my rope!! My doctor who knows my story couldn't see me,The office urine test was neg. !! again I start to sob, he wants to do some cultures..... The nurse went to get my doctor,( who was kind enough to rescue me even when she was busy,) whom said the urine was very dilute so she sent it to the lab and said she thought I should try an antidepressant to help me get through this, along with an antibiotic that I did well with the last uti. she gave me zoloft which probley wasn't the right choice for what we were trying to achieve.......OH my, I was up all night it was and still is horrible I feel sick and shakey and I keep having these waves of weirdness like my brain is crawling and anxiety attachs. my vulva and bottom both feel like I am sitting on a hot pad, although they look normal except for the vest glands that are super swollen thats never happened to me before!! I don't know if it is the zoloft or the antibiotic?? Today I am not taking a damn thing! If i don't have a ut infection what else would cause that?? I saw an urologist a while back, he said I was perfectly normal!! This just keeps getting better!!!!!!! Did you have a catheter? You can get that feeling from having one

put it as it stretches the urethra (the surgery ones do but not the

ones they use to get urine samples).

Lynn what a great bunch of info I am printing it to take to my doctor, I had a cytoscopy done in oct. not with water though. When this first happened to me, i had the bladder trouble big time then came the vulvar burning, i even asked back then if the pain meds i was taking for the bladder where causing my burning, now that I know that the vulvar tissue is being damaged some how( the hyperkeritinized cells)

This gives me something to look for. I am going to try keeping everything off it and try the antacid, the dermatologist gave me one because it can also help with allergys.he said dermatitis and tried to give me another steroid?? I think I need to look into what you have just told me.

Thank you,

Daphne

I'm glad this was helpful....

here is something I just found at the IC-Network site:

" When IC patients speak of their pain, they often describe it in many

different ways, including: pressure, heat, electrical currents, razor

blades or ground glass. Many IC patients also describe their pain as

being referred to their back, vagina, rectum, perineum or lower

extremities. "

Here is the site:http://www.ic-network.com/handbook/

There is a Top 10 List of foods to avoid (too acid) and see if any of

them are triggers for you....you'll have to think back or brave it

and try one of them. Not all of them affect all IC patients either---

some can drink coffee for instance.

#1: Cranberry Juices & Extracts

#2: Coffee & Tea Products

#3: Carbonated Beverages & Sodas of Any Type (diet & regular)

#4: Tomatoes, Tofu and some Beans

#5: Herbal Teas

#6: Tobacco

#7: Alcohol & Vinegars

#8: Chocolate

#9: Strawberries & other acidic fruits

#10: Food Additives & Seasonings

Also-read the list of the related conditions on the bottom left of

the page--vulvodynia is one of them.

This may not be what is causing your symptoms but if it is---it

would be nice to get a diagnosis and get treated.

Good luck!!!

Daphne,

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this.

I know how you feel, the exact same thing happened to me. I had the

regular VV for about a year, then the bladder problems started. For

some odd reason I would get temporary relief from Diflucan, but that

is not what I did to make it go away for good. The urinary and

urethral gland pain is worse than the vulvar pain, in my opinion.

Daphne, you have become allergic to something and you need to find

out what it is, fast. The longer you let the inflammation go on the

harder it will be to cure. Allergies are hard to pinpoint, because

they develop slowly, over time. Go on an elimination diet for two

weeks. Eat only meat (and meat you don't usually eat all the time,

chicken maybe you should avoid too if you eat it all the time) and

vegetables and fruit (but no citrus, it's a common allergen). No egg,

diary, wheat, corn or yeast. See if you feel better. I can tell you

from experience that eating something you are allergic to *can* make

you have pain down there, my bladder goes crazy if I eat a lot of

yeast, like a beer, and if I eat corn-based products my urethral

glands start killing me. You'll have to read lots of labels on food

and it's hard to eat out, but it will be worth it. Then start trying

out the bad foods one by one, one every couple of days. I bet you

$100 you will find a few foods that set off the pain. You are

probably allergic to some of your hormones too, I know of 2 places in

the US that do this kind of testing, let me know if you would like

contact info.

Keep coming here to vent if you feel like it, this kind of pain is

very draining.

Hi ,

Could you possible e-mail me some information

on hormone allergies or how to go about being

tested for them? I basically in the same situ-

ation as Daphane with the urinary, vulva and

vaginal burning and pain. I have tried just

about everything possible except surgery and

am losing hope in ever feeling better.

Thanks, Pam

Lynne,

I didn't have a catheter in, but I had put wadding in that area that would sometimes dry in quite hard and I think I got a bit bruised or inflammed. I had this feeling like I didn't have control over the muscles in that area. I still get a twinge/ache now and again. I find this area is very sensitive, considering my hospitalisation was at the end of November last year.

Daphne,

good luck and I hope there is some improvement for you soon.
