Guest guest
Jill, and others, is finally out of status from the chickenpox, but still in hospital, was in intensive care for 7 days on a midazolam infusion, up to the ward yesterday following the infusion 'tap' being turned off in the morning following a drawn out wean from it. EEG yesterday afternoon was apparently (verbal report only) completely normal, no epileptiform activity at all, normal background etc! I credit the diet for this minor miracle, there are those at the hospital that are sceptical, but that's okay! Somehow managed to keep him in ketosis through it all, despite hiccups through lack of knowledge of the diet, cleaning his teeth with toothpaste in our absence etc. Anyway, the purpose of this post is also to question the lactose content in his meds. I didn't know lamictal contained lactose, my worry has been that is now on nitrazepam, an oral benzodiazepine to cover the weaning of the midazolam infusion. We plan to get him off this ASAP, but are very wary of rocking the boat at present. The nitrazepam also contains lactose, and although we have calculated it into the diet, am I right in thinking this could be a seizure trigger, being one of the 'oses'. Is this why so many ketokids are not completely seizure free till off lamictal and other drugs that contain lactose etc? Guest guest
So glad to hear that is out of status! Do you think he will be home for new years? So sorry that there is so little knowledge at the hospital and they are making so many mistakes with him. When Mike is in the hospital we always have someone staying with him at all times - myself, my hubby or one of my parents - I am very very fortunate that we are able to do this and I am sure it has stopped many problems that would have happened had we not been there since the staff altho wonderful with the kids at the hospital - they dont know much if anything about this diet either! Glad things are getting better for !! Hope he comes home soon!! Guest guest
, I hadn't had time to respond earlier, but I have been reading your posts. You must be exhausted! I'm so happy to hear that is doing much better. I know when we are in the midst of things such as that it feels as though it will never end and when it finally does, the physical and emotional exhaustion sets in along with the relief of better days. It sounds like they did not make things easy for you in the hospital. Good for you for being such a wonderful advocate for your child. My input about the lactose base is to be very careful. Some kids can tolerate small amounts of things like that and others can't. Since you may have had trouble with it before, I would be wary. Marissa is one that is very sensitive to most everything. Even a tiny bit of any type of sugar sends her into status. Love Jen
