Guest guest
Hi Following the discussion on optimum blood sugar levels (3.0 - 4.2 or 55-75) I decided to check out what was happening with to see if it could be a factor affecting her seizure control Guess what - I found that about an hour after meals her BSL was increasing to 5.2 - 5.4. I don't know if that was her peak level or if it would go even higher. She has been having the oil component of her meals after she has eaten everything else (her choice). She eats quite slowly so there was some time between when she first commenced eating and having the oil, meaning that most of her food was probably partly digested by the time the oil was ingested. I believe that eating oil slows down the metabolism of food in the stomach and wondered whether giving her the oil before her meal would lower her peak BSL reading and assist in keeping it more stable for longer. I tested this theory with lunch and dinner tonight and obtained BSL readings of 4.1 and 4.2 an hour after eating. I will be interested to see if this results in better seizure control. It appears that when the oil is consumed, can make a difference to the BSL. Has anyone else found a difference like this? For those who have the oil/cream mixed in with the meal, this would not be significant, but for those who have the oil separately, it could be. Guest guest
You're on the right track..... this is exactly what we were told to do by our dietician...... if we were not giving an "all-in-one" meal, to make sure the fat (or at least some of it) comes at the beginning of the meal, and anything that is higher in carbs/sugars (like applesauce, for example) should come last or else it will cause the blood sugar to surge.
