Guest guest
Hi. My name is . My 3 year old son just started the Ketogenic diet 1 week ago. He has myoclonic seizures with developmental delays and has had one status epilepticus event. He is currently not on any meds, we weaned him off Lamictal because of the side effects. Since starting on the diet he has been constantly complaining of being hungry, does anyone have any feedback on if this part gets any better? He is low weight so he is only on a 3:1 ratio with 850 calories. Also, having trouble with his ketones. We believe we are following the diet correctly and have discussed it with the dietician, but he went back to trace today. I hope someone out there has some words of hope. We think his seizures have been better and we really want to do this, but it is so much harder than I ever imagined. Thanks hespalza@... Guest guest
Hi , There is much trial and error on the diet. You have to be very patient. And not to alarm you but, ... we have been on the diet for nearly one year and we are still fine tuning it. If your son is hungry, it could be from too high calories or too low ketones, or he may remember how much he used to eat before the diet. The calories are very low; just enough to maintain weight. Fat has 9 calories per gm, protein and carbohydrates are just 4 calories per gm, so the quantity is going to be less than half of his previous meals. That will take some time to adjust to. If ketones are trace you will not get the suppression of appetite that high ketones do. You may have to raise the ratio to get sufficiently high ketones. Holmes wrote: > > Hi. My name is .
