I couldn't think of another place to ask this question so I hope no

one gets upset by it.

My daughter is 11.5 years old. She told me today that she has

started having a discharge that dries yellow on her underware and

is " funky " smelling. I asked if it smelled like fish or dirty socks

she said--no--just weird.

I don't want to take her to the doctor as it may be too traumatic for

her and I know from reading that it is normal to have a clear

discharge dry yellow and that she is at the age for getting discharge

prior to having her period (which follows the discharge about 6-12

months later).

Does anyone with a daughter or remembers their daughter mentioning

that it " smells " . I can't find anything about it. All sites say it

should be " odorless " but I think they mean offensive odor. I know

women have a " musky " " sweet " scent and I can't tell if this is what

she is referring to. She has no burning or itching so I just wonder

if this is the " normal " female scent she is talking about.

Thanks all!

Lynn

Lynn,

Post this question to the Women's Health Forum b/c the drs can

tell you whether or not this should be investigated by a

gynecologist. I do understand about the trauma but if she does

have an infection of some sort going on (and that's just a

guess) this needs to be looked in to by her pediatrician and

eventually a gyn as the case may be.

In all the years that I've had a discharge (both clear and

yellow-yellow for me means infection) I never had any kind of

odor in puberty. I didn't start having to be concerned about

discharge odor until the last few years.

Each situation is different. Sorry that I can't be of more

help.

Thanks !

She did get some pamphlets and pads from school when they did

the " sex talk " . She is SOOOO much more informed about this than I

EVER was! LOL

I just get nervous because of my own problems and I knew that the

yellow when it dried was normal but not about the scent. I did tell

her (gross so be forewarned) to wipe and smell the tissue. It would

be musty or sweat. She said sweat one time and nothing the other so

without any burning or itching---I told her it was normal and that

anytime in the next year she could start her period. She was actuall

excited by that! Poor thing-----has no idea! LOL Her friends are

starting to have periods so she is anxious to be " just like them " and

yet they want to be independent!! LOL

Thanks again all----

Lynn, I remember having that discharge when I was 12

(before my period started at in my 12th year) or so,

and also thinking it was weird. In retrospect, it was

perfectly OK, and I had no infection or anything. Can

you give her underwear a sniff when she's not around?

It could just be that unfamiliar " female " smell she's

smelling, or even a little urine smell.

BTW, there are gyns who specialize in pediatric

gynecology, if you need to take her to one.

Take care!

Thanks Suzy---

I actually did that!! LOL I could not smell anything unusual and it

wasn't as yellow as I had pictured so I think things are all OK on

the home front. Now to wait for the actual period to start!!

UGGGGGHHHH. Hormones are swinging here let me tell you---as she is

getting more and more mine are out of whack. This should be VERY

interesting for the men around here! ;-) I can't really say it like

that though because my son is also having hormone problems---the

testosterone has gotten into his brain and he can't seem to make good

decisions! One thing after another lately. This too shall pass.....
