Guest guest
Hi , Grant just got the next MMR vaccine 12 days ago and I am hoping there will be no reaction ...10-14 days out is when you see a problem if any. My neurologist also said not to give the pertussis part of the DTP vaccination but Grant is only 4 so we will worry about that later. I am not sure why not to give the pertussis part but will look into it later. good luck, kim
Guest guest
We have kept Hannah's immunisations up to date. After the first DTP (regular kind) we decided to get the DTaP for the following shots. All her problems are congenital and were not worsened by the immunisations. (hannah's mum, australia) Immunizations I have decided to bite the bullet and get Brittany's last vaccination. The only one she is missing is the last DTaP and in discussions with my dietician and pediatrician we have decided to immunize while she is on the diet so that she has the protection. I have decided she will not get the pertussis part of the vaccine. I don't believe there is any correlation between her epilepsy and past vaccinations but I am still nervous. Guest guest
Dear : I know you are torn-but you are getting this advice from Mothers who fear for your precious child. I must tell you that my son started to seizure within 5 days of his MMR shot. In hindsight-I should have seen from his first shot forward-the swelling, uncontrolled crying. He also developed thrush at about 2 months of age and continued to suffer from it to the point where we painted his mouth purple 4 times a day for 6 months, ear infections and tubes and then my perfectly normal son started to seizure and regress. So the Ped says no more immunizations-and he held his own untill this same wonderful ( & *%#@) Ped convinced me to give him his kindergarten shots and from that week forward he started to seize between 60-200 times a day-intractable, autistic behaviors. It went against my very core to believe that immunizations (WHICH SAVED THE WORLD) could have caused this. But I am also positive that they caused this nightmare to fall on my sweet precious son-who has been robbed of many years of his life. PLEASE..................talk it over with your doctor, research and then do what you can live with. It is ultimately your decision. I too believed I had to go along with the Ped and the Neuro-but now I listen, research, talk to the other Mom's on this list, pray alot, pull out my hair, jump up and down, cry........and then I go in and argue my point, come back and start again. Be Brave, Be Wise and Pray Alot-I will pray for you. Hugs Diane Re: Immunizations Barb: thank you so much for all the info. I am still very torn as what to do but am going to take more time to do some research as you suggested. So many things to think about!!!! Guest guest
Just putting in my .02...Logan's seizure are not thought to be seizure related but since this has been brought up I know a friend several years ago had a son that developed menigitis from one of the immunizations he was given and because of that is now, though doing better, has developmental delays. Not sure if he had any seizures. Sorry just sitting here with one of those hhmmmm... moments. Take care, Kalii __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi I wanted to put my two cents in too regarding immunizations. When my daughter was an infant and had her first DPT, she had a shock reaction to it. Her body temperature dropped several degrees, she turned a ghostly gray (for about 8 hours!), and refused to nurse for a whole day (when she had been a greedy nurser prior). She now has severe learning disabilities, and one of her neurologists actually said (I say " actually " as most Dr.'s of my acquaintance don't like to venture a guess on the how's and why for's of her epilepsy) that this reaction could have caused a brain disruption that evolved over the years into seizures. I also know a girl, now 15, who was a perfectly typical kid until the day after her kindergarten series of immunizations. She had a very severe reaction and is now extremely cognitively impaired, and her mom has been in a very lengthy lawsuit with the pharmaceutical company. I also know quite a few autistic kids, and you probably already know that a lot of their parents feel that there is some relation between the preservative in the MMR vaccine and the onset of autism. I am really not trying to scare you, or talk you out of anything. I just hope everyone, when making big decisions, can learn all sides of an issue, and know that reactions to immunizations DO occur. When I was researching all this years ago, I found the Mothering Magazine Immunization Issue to be of immense help. I saw a current issue of this a few months ago in a local health food store. It presented the other side of the argument that is not given out by our pediatricians. This is not to slam the doctors, as they give information on their point of view, and this is understandable, but I am a great believer in the credo, " question authority " ! I know you will do what is right for you. Guest guest
Can you get your child a waiver to enter public school if you have not gotten all their vaccines? I guess it depends on each state? My son has idiopathic generalized epilepsy which began at age 3. I can not say if vaccines had anything to do with his epilepsy, he is healthy otherwise. I do know that I got out his vaccination record the other day and started counting how many vaccines he received and he got 17 vaccines between birth to 18 months old!!!!! I compared that to my sister-in-laws daughter that lives in Canada and she got many less than that. I got only the vaccines that they recommended that I get him and never questionned why he was getting so many. Is the US vaccine happy or is this common in other developed countries to get this many vaccines? I wish I could find my vaccine record from when I was born and compare. I was born in 1962 so that was a looong time ago but it would be interesting to compare. kathy
Guest guest
I have to add my .02 as well. I'll try not to get up on my soapbox- I tend to do that with this subject. Marissa was a normal birth. Never had any problems until DPT. She started seizing and was put on Phenobarb, which controled the seizures. The docs all told me there was no possible way DPT was responsible, and that I would be endangering my child if I did not continue vaccinating. So we did. At 12 months she got her MMR. At that point she had been developmentally normal, had a few words, pulled to stand, etc. 14 days after MMR she went into status and we lost the little girl she used to be. She could no longer even sit. Her EEG had gone from normal to so slow the neuro said she would never sit, crawl, talk, or even know who her parents are (luckily he was wrong- she has developed to about a 12 month level at 4). We tried to pursue a lawsuit, as some people on the list may remember, but we were told that our case would not hold up because on Marissa's initial hospitalization she was able to breastfeed. Therefore, her brain injury is not considered serious enough for compensation. Also consider that every package insert for every vaccination warns against potentially severe reactions if given to a child with seizures. Just research and decide for yourself. If you have educated yourself, no matter what decision you make, it will be the right one for you. Don't let any doc push you into anything that makes you uncomfortable. Guest guest
Sorry to beat a dead horse but...our Ped today just noted that Logan was due for his shots. MMR, DPT, Polio. You all know the ones. I love our Ped but he is persistant that Logan will not be harmed from getting these shots. Is there anywhere I can get information to arm myself that says shots should not be given. He will listen to me but I want to back up my concerns with whatever I can find. Anyone can email me privately if they want at kal4u_00@... Thanks Kalii Mom to Logan 4 (ketokid since 07/01, seizure free) and big brother Cody 8. Guest guest
Dear Kali: Tell him to read the insert sheet that comes with the shot. Honestly it says right on there not to give the shot to a child with a seizure disorder or previous seizure disorder. Talk to the Ped-tell him what your daughter has been through.
