On August 4, 2002 at 12:25 am, Jenlmat@... started a VERY LIVELY

thread by posting:

--------------------------<snip>-----------------------------------

She was upset because her " LoneStar Card " had been stolen. That's a

food stamp " credit card " here in Texas. She said someone took it

from her. I asked if she knew the person that took it. Turns out

she did. She said " I gave it to so and so to go get groceries and

she was gonna buy me some cigarettes for it " ......WELL!!!!! I said

" You know that's against the law don't you? " and she said " Yes....and

now I'm afraid I won't get my card back " I told her " No ma'm you

probably won't because I'm sending an officer out to take a report to

take a report and we will forward this information to the welfare

office " It made me so angry!!!

-----------------------<end snip>------------------------------------

I'll toss in my .02 by saying I agree with the majority of the views

posted here. Most of us on this list are earning a relatively decent

income and can live a fairly comfortable lifestyle. We pay our due to

the government and basically want to be left alone, unless we need

something from the government we help finance.

That's what makes it so difficult for us when we put on the " Public

Safety Dispatcher " hat, and take a call for service from someone like

the person Jenlmat@aol described - we do (or at least try to) push

our preconception(s) to the " back burner " when we handle a call of

this nature. And we all know - it isn't easy.

Some on the list spoke about themselves (and their parents)

sacrificing for their children's sake. On that point, I agree.

Personally, my pride is such that I would rather work my tail off to

make ends meet than suffer the embarrassment (in my opinion) of

having to go onto welfare. But, to each his own.

(stepping off the soapbox and going to work on the " Am I Being To

Sensitive " thread)
