Hi,

Personally, I'd do the urine culture first, as I too am

wary of the antibiotics causing problems. I am in the same

situation with my daughter, as she had blood yesterday ad

today leukocytes (white blood cells) in her urine, so it's

time for a culture.

Good luck

, mom to Ally

p.s. we get a 24 hour result first, before the final

culture result

Well, you should definitely order the urine culture. You should also push fluids big time. Keto kids can dehydrate very fast and that will make them sicker. She might have kidney "gravel" - not as painful as stones. My son Jake had that at one point, symptom was blood in the urine. We did an ultrasound to rule out stones.

When Jake has needed antibiotics (for a strep throat) we've given him a one dose shot of penicillin - it hurts, but eliminates oral meds. I don't know if they would use that in her case - but you could ask. I don't think I'd start any antibiotic w/out getting the culture back.

Fluids are key. Anything that she'll drink...or ice chips, keto popsicles, sugar free jello, etc. If she won't drink and she is dehydrated you might want to consider IVing fluids in to get her back to a level baseline.

By the way, if she's the little girl in the photo, she's a beauty. Hope she feels better.

Blood in urine. What to do?

Sydney has had a stomach virus for the past three days. Yesterday the multi stick said she had trace blood in her urine. Today it says moderate. Im concerned about a kidney stone or a UTI. Yesterday they said the blood was probubly from dehydration. I dont feel like its a kidney stone because she is not in extreme pain. She hasnt been eating. Her ketones are at 160. No seizures so far. I called her pediatrician . He said lets do a urine culture. Well that takes two days to get back. Another choice would be to start antibiotics. I am scared to give antiobiotics. Doesnt that carry a chance of seizures if they are sensitive. Any suggestions please.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I think we have decided to wait for the culture. I sent a picture of her because we are so proud to have those beautiful brown eyes clear and not glazed over.
