Guest guest
Congratulations to all that posted the latest successes! They are so wonderful to hear! I am going to boast that lin sucked his thumb for the first time in months last night! I know most parents would not be celebrating that their 3 1/2 year old sucked his thumb but while at the height of our Topamax dosage, lin suddenly stopped sucking his thumb. He started having all sorts of neurotic behavior and would not let anyone touch him at all. He did not even want his own hands to touch him and would sit on the couch holding his hands in the air to make sure that they didn't touch his body. And of course he stopped sucking his thumb. He would scream if anyone even brushed against him. He has always been a very loving little boy that likes to snuggle so this change was amazing. Since we had started lin on an Atkins modified diet and he was having much fewer seizures, we asked the neuro if we could start weaning the topamax. He agreed. We started to wean slowly and lin's behavior got worse instead of better! Called the neuro and he just advised us to increase the topamax back up. Just feeling that topamax had to be the cause of it all, we decided to continue on with the weaning on the schedule that the neuro had first advised. So lin is now drug free and finally, finally, his behavior is changing back to the little boy that we love! He is letting us kiss him and hug him and he seems soooo much happier than he was. This is the first time lin has been drug free since January of this year when his seizures began. Looking on the internet for answers to lin's behavior problems, I was amazed to see how many of the drugs that we use to control seizures are also prescribed for mental disorders like depression and bi polar disorders. I can't help but think that if you keep pumping those drugs into these little brains, that you can cause all sorts of behavior problems that never existed before. lin's behavior was closest to descriptions that I read about the bipolar disorders. lin's still having anywhere from 1- 6 drops a day but I sure hope we are on the right track now and won't have to go back to medication.
