Guest guest
>We'll often switch at " halftime " but the police dispatcher never speaks to the public unless he/she calls them.< That's something that I'm sure many on this list do not understand. In many small communities there are 9-1-1 or police/fire lines ringing into a city hall or sheriffs department.. and there is one person sitting there... One person... fire/police/ems... plus citizen complaints, officer requests, computer traffic... This person also makes all the " outgoing " calls... to wreckers, water department, street departments, dog catchers.. paging firemen/ems... Then... someone calls wanting to leave a message for the Mayor, or Chief, or Sheriff.... And oh yea... The volunteer fireman's meeting has been changed to next Tuesday... And don't forget.. the EMS schedule has changed... Make sure that gets put on the board... Then.. Your relief calls in sick.. there's no one else to do it, so you start trying to find someone to call in. The person who's doing this has little, or no training. They are working for very low wages, sometimes minimum wage.. And if something goes wrong... guess who's the first to catch blame. I was once one of those Dispatchers... and sometimes I'm not far from it now.... So... from one old " one man " Dispatch, to those still working across the land.... A tip of the hat.... You are appreciated. Weintraut
