Hi all,

I know it's been awhile since I've been here- I'm just happy that I

have you all to come to, when I need some advice!

As most of you know, my daughter , who has Rett Syndrome, has

been on a modified version of the keto diet, since 10/99, when the

real keto alone no longer worked, and we had to go back to also using

a med. She has proven over and over that sugars and high carbs can

send her back into clusters of seizures, very quickly!

We stick to no sugar, low carbs, and we continue to put butter on all

meals, and she continues to drink her cream, or we freeze it into a

small ice cream dessert!

Anyway, to my point here- has been having fairly good luck with

her BM's, but occassionally,as is common in Rett girls, she will

revert back to very large, hard stools.

She is on a good multi vitamin powder that has fiber in it, along

with a potent vitamin C powder. Both are free of all that could harm

her, as I got these from our naturopathic doctor, who is well aware

of the keto diet and how it works.

My question is: what can I give to help her with her BM's, that

would not cause more seizures, that would be safe for her, not cause

cramping, etc.

We have been on Cal-Mag Zinc II before, but now her new vitamin has a

lot of calcium in it already, and I don't want to end up with too

much of this.

Senekot sent her stomach into spasms and we had one miserable little

girl!

Thank you anyone, for your help! I appreciate it!

Take care,

Kandy

Kandy,

I would give her a supplement of magnesium to go with her other vites. I don't know what the ratio of calcium to magnesium is in the Whole Life product but I think most people agree that it should be at least 2:1 calcium to mag, if not 1:1. If she gets diarrhea, then you'll know you've exceeded her personal requirement for magnesium and you can back off from there. There shouldn't be any other negative effect from the increase. Anyway, this is the safest thing I know of ..... and works well for most kids.

We use 1.5 cc of Phospha soda with Ariana. These seems

to keep her bowels regular. The soda is given with

water between feedings and Phosphorus seems to prompt

bowel movement naturally. The things we have to

consider others without keto kids don't have to have a

clue about. Oh well, we all do our best.

This is for sure! It's so easy for a doctor to prescribe something, only to get it home and say, "OH MY GOSH, this ingredient causes seizures!"........and it's back to square one! thanks for the tips!

Take care, Kandy
