Tikosyn

Because of an episode 5 years ago of ventricular tachycardia I

received an ICD-Pacemaker and was put on amioderone. Originally, I

just had Afib and was taking Rhythemol, but after the VT the doctors

didn't care about the Afib and amioderone is the drug of choice for

VT. Needless to say, it does't do anything for the Afib. Since I have

never had another episode of VT I've started to think about taking

Tikosyn for the Afib. Wish I knew if the reason my ICD has never

fired was because the amioderone works or the VT episode was just a

fluke.

I know that I have to be off the amioderone for a while before I can

take the Tikosyn. After reading the tread about overdose on Tikosyn I

guess its not as simple as taking one in the AM and one in the PM.

I love how Pfizer says the most serious side effect is a " different

type of dangerous abnormal heartbeat " .

Anyone here have a problem going onto Tikosyn?

Thanks,

Marty Alpert

PS I also take Toprol XL, coumadin, prinival and Zocor

Hi Marty,

Fortunately, I have no other known heart disease, other than

thickening of left atrial wall from high BP, which Drs say is the

cause of my afib.

I went on tikosyn in Sept, 2002 and converted to NSR 3 hrs after the

1st dose. Back in afib about 36hrs later, but converted 3 hrs after

the next dose. Uneventful hospital stay.

First couple of months were touch and go until tikosyn was

established in my system. Occassionally still have a bout of afib,

but the usual cause is lack of sleep, extreme stress, or something

I've eaten with unknown MSG.

I just went off my toprol this past weekend. Fingers crossed that I

can stay off as it is keeping me from losing weight. I believe it

made me gain wt and lose more hair.

With having VT, you would be more at risk for that bad side effect of

an unusual rhythm since that unusual rhythm has to do with the

ventricals. Hope you have a good EP that can assess if you can try

tikosyn. Many of us think of Tikosyn as our miracle drug.

btw: Tikosyn is as simple as taking dose twice a day, 12 hours apart.

Not sure what you gleaned from the other string that said one could

overdose on tikosyn.

Keep us posted on your decisions and what the Dr says.

Cheryl
