Hi Tammy,

The way I lost weight and got off meds was by cutting back on the amount of

food I ate and started exercising more.

These are some choices that I can eat. Some people can eat these foods,

others cannot. The best way to find out if you can or not is to eat, then

test 2 hours later to see what bg's are.

Breakfast

About 1/3 cup dry oatmeal, cooked with water, sweetened with Splenda. Add

Cinnamon if you like it. Maybe a couple big strawberries or a small amount

of blueberries.

Scrambled egg(s) with mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. 2 slices of

bacon (can be turkey bacon) and 1/2 slice of toast with margarine spray.

1/2 cup of cottage cheese sweetened with Splenda and fruit added to it.

Lunch

1/2 sandwich and a salad

Small bowl of veggie soup with 2 crackers

Large salad

Hamburger (eat only 1/2 of the bun)

Dinner

some kind of fish with a salad

Chicken stir fry - I get the frozen pre-cooked Tyson's chicken strips. Cut

this up with frozen veggies and cook until veggies are done.

Almost any kind of meat in small portions. Have a salad or green beans,

cauliflower, etc.

Also, you can have snacks, which makes it easier to eat smaller portions at

each meal.

I prefer to have my higher carbs for breakfast and lunch because I'm usually

doing work, yardwork, housework, etc after eating.

I don't want to exercise after dinner (we eat a late dinner) so I will go

light on the carbs.

Only occasionally have potatoes, spaghetti, rice - the starchy foods.

Once you get your bg's in control, you may be able to eat more carbs. Each

person is different.

In all honesty, I do not believe in low carbing. I did try low carbs for a

short period and I almost ended up in the hospital. I know some people do

this and that is okay. No food plan is going to work for everyone. Each of

us has to find the plan that works for us. I prefer to eat smaller portions

from all the food groups. This is what works for me.

There is now a sugar free bread and one called Very Thin sliced bread by

peppridge farm. Both are lower in carbs then your average bread. Check it

out they are tasty. I really like the thin sliced because I can have two

pieces and still make a sandwich :)

I've mentioned this before, but the two best pieces of advice I heard (and they

are almost the same) that helped me lose about 100lbs are:

1) Think about what an " average " person would consider a " portion " . Would an

average person eat 1 or 2 pieces of chicken or a bucket full?

2) Everything is " single serving size " . If you buy a 75 cent bag of chips, you

eat it as a single serving. If you buy a 4 dollar bag of chips, you eat it as a

single serving.

Along these lines, buying in bulk does NOT save money, since you wind up eating

more food sooner. A pack of 24 waffles may save money over a pack of 8 waffles,

but you eat the 24 waffles quicker than if you bought 3 sets of 8 waffles on

different days.

Also, I'm a single person, so I don't have to buy or prepare food for more than

one. With a family you need to be extra careful. Making everyone else diet

with you doesn't work. However, maintaining weight is easier, since you will be

eating healthy and there is no problem with having your family eat the same way.

Although you have to keep in mind that they can have bigger portions and treats

than you can.

If you have a bakery handy near you, you can always ask them to slice the bread

thinner. It usually costs you nothing extra (if it does, go somewhere else).

Some thing at any deli or butcher (even a Safeway store), ask for them to cut

slices thinner or smaller for you.

I know what you mean about not making everyone else eat what you eat. That

is my biggest battle here. Either they eat what I should eat or I have to

cook 2 different things. It is so much harder this way.

With a family you need to be extra careful. Making everyone else diet with

you doesn't work. However, maintaining weight is easier, since you will be

eating healthy and there is no problem with having your family eat the same

way. Although you have to keep in mind that they can have bigger portions

and treats than you can.

It does make it harder. It's not impossible. When I was the only one

cooking, I made the basic meal, and then added in the starchy stuff.

One thing I do is to split up the portions. If we get that box of 24

waffles, for example, it gets split up into either 24 or 12 seperate

servings and frozen that way. This way, you can take advantage of buying in

bulk and still eat the right portion size.

How old are your kids? The reason I ask is that my aunt, when her kids got to a

certain age, told them that she'd keep the refrigerator stocked and they could

start cooking for themselves; henceforth she would only cook for herself and

their father except for special occasions.

I know what you mean about not making everyone else eat what you eat. That

Perhaps giving them a choice: either eat what you put before them (that is, what

is in accordance with your WOE) or taking responsibility for their own meals

henceforth? (The 18-year-old, at least, is old enough that he should learn how

to cook for himself; he's going to be leaving home soon.)

It also occurs to me that, as there is a genetic component in diabetes, having

them eat what you eat might establish good habits in them that would delay or

ward off the onset of diabetes.

My boys are 18 and 13, but I couldn't do that. It just isn't in my nature.

Unless they were working full time and never home much. But both of mine

are still in school and home every night.

That is true, my 18 yr. old most anything that doesn't eat him first. He

was once a very picky eater, wouldn't eat new. My 13 yr. old is like that,

he has health problems, asthma, lung damage and is very small for his age.

Although his dr. stress healthy eating, they also stress feed him the

things, within reason, that he will eat so he can gain weight. For

instance, he loves noodles, so they tell me to feed them to him every night

if he will eat them. Of course we have other foods and continuously try to

get him to eat them. Meat is one thing he won't eat, but he loves pork n

beans. Also peanut butter, so he gets his protein from them.

Also get them involved in preparing meals if they already aren't. Explain how

certain foods affect you and what happens when you eat. You may start to

instill good eating habits if they aren't already there, and in reference to the

genetics at least they will know what to eat if it hits them

My boys are 18 and 13, but I couldn't do that. It just isn't in my nature.

Unless they were working full time and never home much. But both of mine

are still in school and home every night.
