Guest guest Posted April 7, 2003 Report Share Posted April 7, 2003 My eyes have gotten considerably worse in the last few months when I was off my diabetic diet when my bg's were up. I have trouble reading everything... close or far away. My eyes have always stayed about the same thru the years...maybe changing here or there a little. But now my vision is so bad I can barely function. I get stabbing pains in my eyes like someone is sticking me with a needle at times. I am scheduled to have a dr's appt next week to get new glasses and have an eye exam for my diabetes... but I need to understand something before I actually go and can't seem to find an article on it anywhere online. IF I stay on my food plan and my bg's stay in control, do the eye problems that come from diabetes get better with time? If so, if my doctor finds that my problems come from the diabetes, should I wait a while about getting new glasses? It seems like it would be a $350 - 400 expense that I don't need right now if my eyes are going to get better on their own anyway. Does anyone know? I am pretty scared about the vision changes. I'm not seeing spots, but once in a while, especially in the mornings, there will be an area of my vision that looks funny. Just a small thing. It causes the image in front of it (behind it?) to be a little blurry, and it " pulses " , sorta, kinda like I'm seeing the blood move in a blood vessel. There is no colour changes of any kind. It normally goes away after a few minutes. Could this be diabetic related? Or something else? I've worn glasses all my life (about 3rd grade) and my current vision is over 300 both eyes, fully correctable. Guest guest Posted April 9, 2003 Report Share Posted April 9, 2003 Shirley, I had this vision problem when I was first diagnosed a 11 mo ago. My doctor told me it was due to my high bg (580!) and told me to wait until I gained control before getting an eye exam or buying new glasses. My vision was so bad, a few weeks before my diagnosis, I got us lost on my honeymoon because I couldn't see the street signs! So I waited impatiently as my bg came down and finally, the day I was released from the hosp, the calander on the wall looked much clearer than it had the day before. Strange thing is, a week after i was released, my vision had imporved so much that I had to take my glasses off, because everything was clearer without them. Then it went back to normal a week after that, and I had to put the glasses back on. Never had to replace them though, its been normal ever since. Most health sites list blurred vision as a symptom of diabetes.
