Guest guest
Hi - I have been eating almost exactly what you wrote for 9 months now. I have lost 30 lbs with this WOE and my BGs are under control. My last A1C was 6.2 down from 9.4 on diagnosis. I used to be able to eat jerky, which I love, but all of a sudden, I can't eat it anymore. When I am tempted to eat carbs, I say to myself first: I like my hands, I like my feet. Then I don't eat it. Like so many others, I didn't have any symptoms and no family history. The doc told me that if I had not gained weight, I would not have diabetes. So I ate my way into this disease and I guess you could say I ate a whole lot of those things I no longer eat. Good memories though. LOL Staying off meds is my #1 goal, then keeping BGs under control and then weight. I have also reduced a lot of stress in my life and this helps to keep the BGs down. I did have a huge dog party at my home on Sunday. There were about 50 people and 30-35 dogs. When I checked my BGs toward the end of the event, I was 162 - all stress related as I had not eaten. Thankfully, that is a once a year event. I have been doing this on and off for 4 months now. But recently since I was diagnosed, I eat this way all the time. I have some eggs and meat (bacon sausage or something) for breakfast, nuts or jerky for a snack, salads with chicken or just chicken for lunch and for dinner I eat a meat (steak, chicken, pork) a small green salad and green beans, broccoli, or any other lower carb veggie for dinner. For me, this WOE is #1 for weight loss purposes and #2 to control my BG. I can lose easily this way and now after being diagnosed, I have a HUGE motivation to stick to it. I have to lose weight to control my BG, I know that is the key for me! I was not diabetic until I gained weight over the past 4 years, and I do not fall into the typical age range for adult onset diabetes. Guest guest
, I have a question for you. How much does your BG rise when you eat 10 carbs, say the cheesecake for example. I go up about 5 points per carb. That would be a 50 point spike for me. If I am running in the 120's, it would take me to the 170's which I consider to be too high. Sure wish I could, though!! Carole Re: carbs Sandy, Snacks: . Cheese cubes, slice of ultra lean ham or the atkins go with anything pork rind snack. Peanut butter within reason. Walnuts or Pecans. I have toast on low carb bread [4 carbs per slice]. Put some splenda/cinnamon on it. Cinnamon toast. Every other day I have a low carb shake. All the protein and vitimans a body needs for 4 carbs and 120 calories. I can always tell the days I drink this I am bouncing with energy from the protein and vitamins. Lunch is maybe tuna salad on a bed of lettuce. I'll guess at around 6 carbs with mayo and a bit of diced pickles and celery. Couple of real crackers - 10 carbs. Afternoon snack : low carb cheesecake. These are so good. About 10 carbs. Easy to make too. A broiled/grilled chicken breast w/herbs and butter is 2 carbs. Side of 1 cup green beans - 6 carbs. Slice of low carb herb n garlic bread toast - 4 carbs. Desert- 4 nice ripe strawberries dipped in splenda is less than 6 carbs because a whole cup is only 10 and low on glycemic scale. I make low carb brownies with almond flour and walnut pieces. They are sugar free but taste so good you can't tell they are diabetic. about 10 carbs for a nice size brownie. You can have anything you want if you limit how much you eat of it. Sometimes I grab a couple of my husband's french fries. Or a big spoonful of his mashed potatoes. Have you tried the newest low carb pasta ? pastalia ? Its great. A big serving for 10 g of carb. Pour anything over it you like that is low carb and voila you feel you are cheating and your not. Go low carb shopping. There's some good things out there. And some not so good things. Read labels till you are sick of it and then do it some more. It will come easy after a bit. Hormel ready to heat/eat entrees. I found that the pot roast with gravy and the beef tips w/gravy are only 3 carbs per serving. Why ? Because its real meat. And because they don't put a lot of flour n other junk in it. All in all I think I eat pretty good. Its just a bit more trouble than non diabetics who don't have to think or cook before they put something in their mouths. And whatever I do it works because my last hbac1 was 4.4 And its hard to beat that. On diet and exercise alone. I exercise every day and drink 6-7 tall glasses of water. Guest guest
Lable reading is so important, but it can give you some nasty (as well as pleasant) surprises. A good substitute for pasta is shredded cabbadge (like for cole slaw) steamed. I make my own low-carb pasta with one part white flour/one part whole wheat flour/two parts bean or nut flour. (If I eliminate the wheat entirely the texture is all wrong.) Re: carbs Have you tried the newest low carb pasta ? pastalia ? Its great. A big serving for 10 g of carb. Guest guest
- I think you are luckier than me right now. Perhaps the difference is that I still need to lose more weight. When I get to my goal weight, I think my BGs will run lower and then I can eat more carbs. My goal is to consistently keep my BGs under 140 after meals. Most of the time I can attain this, but not if I eat more than 5-6 carbs per meal. Hey, I have faith - I'll get there!!!! Thanks for listening. Carole Re: carbs Sandy, Snacks: . Guest guest
I am curious how > many carbs you all eat > sandy Hi Sandy, When I decided I wanted off meds (over 2 years ago), I started counting carbs, calories, etc. Once I lost weight (54 lbs) and got off meds, I stopped counting anything. I eat whatever I want but in small portions. I have learned that my higher carbs have to be at breakfast and lunch since I will be doing more exercise (house work, yard work, walking) after eating these meals. Usually for dinner, I have a large salad with protein (chicken, steak, fish). If I do have carbs at dinner, I get on the treadmill for 10 or 15 minutes. Usually this is on Sat night when we have tacos. So far, this is working for me. My bg's are in the good range and I have not gained my weight back. Guest guest
Hi - yes, everyone's BGs go up when they eat, but not as high as ours. I do Boston Terrier rescue here in Las Vegas, NV. We have a club and I do most of the rescuing, fostering and transport. Others in the club breed and show. When the time comes for you to get a new furbaby, pls consider a rescue group. The prices for rescue dogs are quite reasonable and if you don't buy from a pet store, then you won't promote more puppy mills. Most rescue dogs are older, so you don't have to go thru puppydum either. Losing weight is the key to controlling this disease. Carole Re: carbs In a message dated 4/1/2003 4:07:08 PM Central Standard Time, onelvlady@... writes: > Staying off meds is my #1 goal, then keeping BGs under control and then > weight. I Hi Carole, I am on meds, but my Dr. didn't ask, didn't give me a decision to make. Guess I will take them and diet until everything is under control. I know I will get there one day. Hope it is sooner than later. But I guess my number one concern is losing the weight, because I know in my heart that it is the contributing factor to me being diabetic! Awwww dog party sounds fun. I have 2 cats right now (and a gerbil) but I am begging my hubby for a puppy. He says ok, but makes me feel guilty about the money part of it LOL. Oh well. I am now looking for a job, so maybe when that happens, I will get me a new animal companion By the way, what kind of dog/s do you have? Guest guest
Hi Sandy - I don't know what your BGs are running, but my own experience is if I ate the whole grain bread, the milk, lightly breaded shrimp, crackers, an apple or ice cream, my BGs would run close to 200. Too high for me. I want to stay below 140 after meals. Carole On this diet I run in the 120's with some peaks up to 130's and dips down to 100. sandy -- jacaranda Wanderers will return Scattering stardust over all Walking the circle North west south east Dawn day sunset night Trailing purple in a spiral Of passion, honesty and love
Guest guest
I have a Popiel Pastamatic; I'm sure you've seen the infomercials. http://shop.ronco.com/shop/pastamaker/ I love it, and wonder why I didn't get one years ago. You can also use it to stuff your own sausages; when I move into my new apartment where I will have a decent kitchen (with counterspace) I intend to do so. Hi Bruce, Wow you make your own pasta. I don't know anyone who does that but maybe someday you'd post the secrets .
Guest guest
I will occasionally eat brown rice and brown bread. For the latter, home made; I think that the preservatives and additives in store bread probably have as much or more effect on the BG as the carbs themselves. I usually make either rye or whole wheat/flaxseed meal bread. Re: carbs Sandy, I do not eat anything with real sugar, I do not eat any rice, potatoes or anything made with those things. No processed snacks or candy or cakes or bread or any of that. It is pretty radical, but it works for me and I can lose serious weight on it when I stick too it. (which now since I have been diagnosed, I don't have a choice)
Guest guest
Some people are against eating a lot of meat because of the fat, which is bad (they say) for the heart; we diabetics are vulnerable to heart problems. However, my attitude is that something is going to get us. Given the alternative of a) dropping dead of a heart attack or sitting on dialysis, blind with no legs, I'll take (a). Furthermore, my theory is that the fat only clogs up the arteries when it is not burned for energy. One has to get one's energy from somewhere, and if we do not get it from carbohydrates, we have to get it from fat and protien. Re: carbs , I guess it may be different for each person. I don't have any problems with eating meat. Eating low carb helps me lose the weight that I so desperately need to lose and it keeps my BG levels more stable. Guest guest
It should be said that the amount of carbohydrate a particular diabetic can handle per day is as individual as the diabetes; it is different for each person. It also varies by how active one is: climbing Mount Everest takes more energy than punching the remote. You'll have to do some experimentation. I run somewhere around 135 grams of carbohydrate per day -- sometimes up to or above 180 grams per day depending upon what I am doing. But then I'm on insulin. Guest guest
Good advice! Re: carbs That's only 2 pieces of bread a day. The number of carbs a person requires varies greatly depending on gender, age, and activity. 30 carbs per meal, or maybe 90 per day wouldn't be out of the question for a moderately active male, and perhaps for most folks who have some level of activity. Guest guest
The best way to determine how many grams of carbs yo need is to for several days running, eat the same amount at each meal and see h ow your post pranial BG is. If it is above 120 2 hours after eating, then you know to eat less carbs at that meal. This provides that you are doing the same amount of exercise each day. I usuallyeat about 30 grams per meal, but I have to do a lot of running around, I eat more. Guest guest
Hi : That's exactly why I won't go totally carb free. I am pretty ignorant, but common sense is one thing that I am blessed with and my common sense tells me not to go completely carb free. Since last Friday night when Bob and I sat down and he did most of the talking for once, my sugar readings have been more consistent and have stayed within the normal range. We came up with a better schedule of meals and snacks that seems to work well with the Avandia and my body. Hopefully this will continue to work and I will start losing weight once more. The end result is that I am feeling better and definitely have more energy once again.
