Guest guest
>>> I know as RNY patients, calcium is important. Would it be all right to do those chocolate calcium chews or are they bad? Just a thought. I love milk so I pray I won't turn lactose intolerant.<<< It's great that you had such a good consultation and good feel about your surgeon. I think having that confidence is important. Unfortunately, the chocolate calcium chews are NOT good for us. They are the wrong type of calcium - we need calcium citrate. The chews and Tums make our blood work look good but don't get the calcium to our bones. So stick with the calcium citrate. As far as you prayers go about not being lactose intolerant, maybe you would be better off if they weren't answered. Milk is high in sugar - 12 grams or more per 8 ounces. Sugar is the one thing that we do absorb completely. Most people recommend that we don't go over 5 or 6 grams of sugar in a whole meal. I gave milk up completely, along with coffee and diet coke (all carbonated/caffienated drinks) before surgery and began my protein shakes about 3 months before my surgery. I also stopped drinking with my meals at that time. Doing those things before surgery made it so much easier to do them after surgery. Good luck with getting your date soon. I hope it all works out well with your school schedule. Regards, Sheri In Sunny Florida Open RNY, distal and transected 05/29/
Guest guest
No, Viactiv are carbonate. Milk is useless as a calcium source (always was). But is very useful as candy. If you want to preserve your bones, use calcium citrate. Guest guest
Hi , I do not know either. I have been a large consumer of dairy products, and calcium all my life, and still consume a lot of milk, ice cream and cheese daily. I wonder what would happen if I stopped dairy??? Its a shame that I will never find out. I am possibly going into chronic a-fib, and just control the rate. That last article that I read on medscape was just the follow-up that I had been waiting for on the affirm study. I may have a-fib, but I still want my life like it was before. We each have our priorities, and mine is to live life to the fullest in the time that I have left, and have lots of fun in the process. Best of luck in all your endeavors, and on what ever road that you choose to travel. Guest guest
How can I get more calcium? I am loading my foods into fitday.com and looking at the reports, I am only getting a very small percentage of calcium. Help!!! Also, my circle graph shows a lot of fat. I am eating olive oil on my salads and a pat of margarine on veggies. But boy sure shows a large percentage of fat in what I ate yesterday and today. Guest guest
Steve, You are so right. My fat grams are not that high. It's just that the circle graph makes the fat eaten look way high. Jackie in Michigan
Guest guest
Yes, most people need a supplement. You'd be hard-pressed to get the govt RDA level of calcium without a pill. You'd have to purposely eat calcium-rich foods at evry meal, staying focused on that. >
