One of the best raw diets I know, and ever used, was thanks to the

product made by mOrigins.

She has some good info on her website http://morigins.com/mORIGINS4.html

That's a place to start. I wanted to attend a Mech (wolf expert)

talk with her in NYC but unfortunately I couldn't afford the trip!

She's very knowledgable and we used to chat a lot about diet.

I don't really buy into the entire BARF idea. Way too much bone and

reliance on the wrong kind of meats (poultry shouldn't be the staple of

a dog or cat's diet... ungulates are the best for dogs and near best for

cats). I give it occasionally but prefer to stick with grassfed beef

(and if i can get it, sheep/lamb, goat etc). For cats i'm seriously

considering raising rats once i'm settled in with the new baby but

there's my entire being a wuss factor to consider.

I'll try to compile some other things for you later.

If you are feeding a cat a good place to start is catnutrition.org BUT

ignore the obsession with fiber/psyllium husks. I completely disagree

with their ideas on the subject and have research to back it up. I opt

for a quality probiotic (my cats and dogs get primal defense) to do what

they believe the fiber does. I only use fiber in extreme cases of

switching an animal with bowel issues over to raw and " cleaning " house.

Never use it long term, it absorbs nutrients, causes the food to move

too quickly through the GI tract (less gets used by the body then, no

time to break it down and pick it up!) and I also feel it can irritate

the lining of the intestines. We are seeing more and more research on

high bran diets possibly causing or aggrivating colon cancer despite

everyone being told to eat bran to avoid it!

Somewhere I have an article I wrote on the pros and cons of fiber vs.

probiotics. I'll post it or a link to it when I find it. If i forget

just shoot me an email. I'm 37 weeks pregnant and lost my cell phone 3

times this morning already.

I hope this helps get you started!

Raw food dog diet thread

Hi i am having a hard time finding theb eginning of the thread. I am

interested in some sites that would tell me more about the raw food

diet. I have found one site that feeds BARF, but so far not anything

else that goes beyond that as mentioned in the thread. Could someone

point me to the post that has links, or repost the links for me??

TIA

i agree with the recommendation to get a copy of mech's work. i recently got

*Wolves: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation *by L. Mech (editor) and

it is incredibly comprehensive. really gives you the inside skinny on how

these animals live and eat which in turn will enable you to feed your dog

from a much more learned viewpoint.
