Guest guest Posted December 10, 2006 Report Share Posted December 10, 2006 7976 children below 14 years tested positive for HIV in India New Delhi, Dec 9, IRNA A total of 7,976 children in India below 14 years have tested positive for HIV as compared to 7,168 last year. The number of children with HIV detected during 2006 (up to October) show a marginal increase as compared to 2005, a PTI report said here quoting official sources. While 3,074 girls less than 14 years of age and 4,902 boys in 2006 were detected with HIV, 3,007 girls and 4,161 boys in the same age group were detected with the humanimmuno virus (HIV) last year, he said. The maximum number of cases reported were from Andhra Pradesh, where a total of 2,280 children were detected with HIV this year. It was followed with Maharashtra, where 1,258 children were affected with the infection. Around 1,186 children were afflicted with HIV in Tamil Nadu. Delhi has 225 cases, while Kerala had 111 children afflicted with the deadly virus. The minister said no nationwide study has been undertaken to estimate the incidence of AIDS among children. She said they were providing 2,638 children with anti-retroviral therapy drugs.
