Guest guest
I don't know how to describe the sorrow I feel this morning. Somehow I thought Doug might survive long enough for a real cure. Doug posted his journal on the web, from the time of his first signs of ALS 12-96, to his last entry on 11-25-01. I remember when I was really sick and thought for sure I had ALS, I didn't think I could bear to live with such a disease. After reading Doug's journal, I thought, well, if Doug can do it and still keep such a wonderful attitude and spirit, then what am I whining about? My depression lifted and I started thinking about living again. And I decided to actively find ways to keep myself busy and work for a solution to my problems. Thankfully, I didn't continue to spiral downward, but leveled off and then actually improved with my baclofen pump. But Doug wasn't so lucky. Doug touched a lot of lives during his time. So many he never even knew about. You can read his journal online, but start at the beginning. And keep in mind that as his disease progresses, his spirit rise. We were contacted by his wife Irene and at her request are sending out this note to you. Many of you may have already heard the news, but knowing how well-loved Doug was, we wanted to help in getting the word out to his many friends. Words can not express the great service that Doug has done for our ALS community here in Ohio and specifically on behalf of the Western Ohio Chapter. As you may know, Doug's advocacy work through his website, ALS Survival Guide, touched thousands of people across this country, as well as internationally. Once he decided he would not let ALS take him without a fight, he and his wonderful wife Irene became fighters on behalf of those diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease through befriending and providing information to other families going through this struggle. Doug and Irene have been extremely generous in the giving of their time to further educate the public about ALS. Doug, with Irene's support, served on our chapter board of trustees, willingly provided interviews to the local media, wrote numerous ALS-related articles for publication and traveled twice to Washington, D.C./Capitol Hill, advocating to our Members of Congress on behalf of those with ALS. Just recently, Doug and Irene took on the formidable task of Family Team Chair for the first annual Columbus Walk to D'Feet ALS, with their Big Red Team together raising over $10,000.00 in individual contributions, plus more monies in corporate sponsorships. With their help, the Columbus walk raised over $92,000.00. On behalf of the staff and board of trustees of The ALS Association Western Ohio Chapter, our hearts and prayers are with Doug's wife Irene, his son Dan, Doug's mom and brother and the rest of his family at their tremendous loss. Doug will be greatly missed by many, many others who were touched by his generous personality, his wit, his strength and his ever-present and heart-warming smile, no matter what the situation. ===== Thomson, Solana Beach, CA www.geocities.com/mdmfoo/pls.html __________________________________________________
