Guest guest
Why would you be measuring ketosis on South Beach? When used properly the South Beach Diet does NOT create ketosis. I am following the SBD to the letter, but my understanding about these things was that ketosis is part of cutting out carbs, which causes the rapid weight loss. My understanding is that the stict phase causes a rapid weight loss for many people. > > >
Guest guest
Thanks .......on the leg cramps/water AND the ketosis answer. Still, I thought that no carbs for 2 weeks could start such a process. Is it because it's only for 2 weeks?

This will put you into ketosis, and that's what you need the strips for. On South Beach we are allowed carbs in Phase 1, or the induction phase, to use the Atkins term. But the carbs come from vegetables, not from grains or sugars. We don't count carbs, we just eat the ones which are lowest on the glycemic charts. Therefore, since we do eat carbs, we will never go into ketosis and will never need to buy the strips. Spend the savings on box of no-added sugar fugecicles instead, which *are* allowed in the first 2 weeks. -- Ann You spend your life fighting dirt, and when you die they bury you in it. hayakawa@... These carbs are eaten in the form of vegetables which are eaten in salads and low carb veggies with your meals. Ketosis is a achieved during this phase, but it is not necessary to check for it. You can be in ketosis and only have it show up as trace on the sticks. What is important is to eat what is recommended in the food lists just as what is important with South Beach is to eat what is in the foods to enjoy list and avoid the foods that aren't on the list. The first two weeks is relatively minor compared to changing the way you eat and sticking with it through the next phases. Dianne
