I really never dieted before January of this year, when I hopped on

the scale after Christmas vacation and nearly had a heart attack. I

had gained TEN pounds over two weeks! (I guess you can't really drink

eggnog straight out of the carton for that many days and not expect

some gain.) I came home and went on Atkins with my husband, who has

been on Atkins pretty much straight for two years, due to his wild

blood-sugar fluctuations (he also lost about 65 pounds, which didn't

hurt). I lost weight for the first ten days or so, but then never

dropped another ounce, even though I didn't cheat. I finally went off

after three or four weeks, happy to have lost the Christmas weight.

I went on South Beach four weeks ago, have had no trouble sticking to

it, and have lost about twelve pounds (my scale is unreliable, so I

don't know exactly; but people are starting to notice that I'm

thinner, so that's good).

I have only done one diet before and that

was watching my calories. When I did that I lost close to 40 lbs over a period

of 6 months. On the SBD, which I have been doing for a little over a month now,

I have lost 13 lbs so far. My goal is to get to 135 by Christmas. I am at 162

right now.

Question for all

What diet (if any) did you come from before

SB & how much have you lost so far?

Reminder:

The South Beach Diet is not low-carb. Nor is it low-fat. The South Beach Diet

teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats-the good ones-and

enables you to live quite happily without the bad carbs and bad fats.

For the past year I have followed WW - lost about 20 pounds. Before that I spent two years, just eating and gaining. Before that I was on Atkins for two years - lost 7 pounds. I'm at a plateau with WW and I thought that SB would be a good fit with WW to break the plateau and eat more healthy.

I am still reading the book so I haven't really started SB yet. I'm going to read the book first and read all the posts before I start.

I was on Atkins for 5 months, although it was several years ago. I lost

48 lbs in 5 months and my main complaint was the constant bad breath

because of ketosis. I also received no support and had a lot of people

in life griping about how dangerous it was because of the high fat, and

I finally gave it up; no ones fault really but my own. Since then I

have tried WW and even tried Atkins again, but could never get serious

enough to have any real results. By the way, Atkins does approve of

Broccoli; that thread that was going around recently is absolutely not true.

Sandy

I have only dieted once before. Just before I got pregnant with dd#2

I did weight wathcers 123 and lost 20lbs in 5 weeks. I stopped for

christmas holidays and found out early in Jan that I was pregnant.

I tried to go back on it after the birth of dd#2 but didn't have the

right mind set and couldn't even go 1 day. The weight came off

quicker with WW but I found it too hard keeping track of points &

portion sizes etc. It would take me forever to make meals, between

getting supper ready for the kids and weighing and measuring my

food, going back and calculating point values etc. I would also tend

to skimp on points early in the day etc. I started Sb on May 10th

2004 and have lost 21 lbs and very proud of it ;)

A long time ago I did WW and lost weight. I didn't change my

lifestyle so eventually the weight came back. I'm almost done with

phase 1. I've lost about 7-8 pounds so far. A few days ago I had

lost 10 but when I got on the scale yesterday it had changed.

Bummer. I have not done anything different but I think I might know

the reason why so I'm not worried. I'll weigh again in a week and

see how things go.

I thought this question was a good one and so figured I'd use this as my intro.

My name is , I'm 42 years old, married, no children but trying (not easy but not impossible at my age). I'm a registered veterinary technician and DH is 32 and an animator student. We live in a basement apartment of my parents home on 5 acres. We have 4 dogs, 2 cats, 4 ferrets, ducks, chickens and cows. I also have some koi in a small pond and am in the process of building a larger one. I have lived here since 5/98 after leaving a emotionally/mentally abusive relationship with a manic depressive that suddenly turned physical...so I finally scooted. I met my husband in late '99 and we were married in '01. We are staying here until he is out of school. My parents are recently retired and in there early 60's....father-diabetic, mother-heart disease. We help take care of the farm and them when they need it...like last year when my mother broke her neck tripping over a hose and hitting a glass door and when my father had a triple bypass.

In April of '02 I started the Carbohydrate Addicts Lifespan Program (CALP) by Drs. and Heller. I went from 270# to about 180# by the end of the year. I maintained for most of '03 but by Thanksgiving I knew I was in trouble. When I went back on CALP in March '04 I had shot up to 247# (DH went offplan as well and gained all his weight back plus some) and managed to lose about 17# within 6 weeks. Unfortunately, I bounced back between the same 5# after that until the middle of this month. I decided that DH and I needed a change and a good one. We both went off plan for about a week until I got the SBD book and I gained about 10# in that one week...I retained a ton of water.

My biggest problem is that I have a lot of food intolerances and I'm very sensitive to salt so I was losing choices all the time. Their diet is also quite restrictive when it comes to fruit, substitute sweetners and dairy. They completely pooh-pooh the glycemic index and their mantra is if it tastes sweet then it is going to cause a surge in the insulin, thus cravings...and maybe not right away but as late as a few days down the road. Dr. A's view on that subjects is a bit more realistic in my opinion. There are a few CALP rules I mostly continue to follow, like finishing my meal within an hour, no MSG, no aspartame(in moderation if it's the only way something is offered, like Crystal Light) , no sugar alcohols (I prefer and use stevia but will use Splenda in moderation if I'm out). I also prefer their way of weighing. I weigh daily and then average for the week, my weightloss is measured by my weekly averages.

I've been obese all my life. My first real diet was the summer I turned 13. I lost the weight just by not eating between meals. I didn't truly diet again until I was 22 and I used "Herbal Life" and lost some of the weight I wanted to, but not all...I looked good but had a bit to go. Then when I was 26 I used " Simmon's Deal-a-Meal" and lost all but 25# I didn't make any real attempts to diet again until I was about 36 and I went on the Macrobiotic Diet I most certainly did not lose any weight but I felt like I was healthier (yea right). After that I was approaching my 40th birthday and that is what got me to try CALP...now here I am with SBD and I *really* think this is the one.

Oh and I've gone from 240# to 229.5# during this past week, the lowest I saw back on CALP before I got frustrated was 227 once I get there I will be on my way back down to 180#..then on to the virgin fat where I hope to get to about 140-150#. So...I have a ways to go. *sigh*.

Looking forward to learning more and more about the SBD and I will pick up the new cookbook next week.

Thanks for allowing me to join!

Be well!

Hi nice to hear your story. I wish you good eating and lots of weight loss on

the SBD. Hopefully you won't need the hipnosis after too long.Nic0llett@... wrote:

At 12 my mom put me on a dry tuna and rice cake diet but I snuck money and had pizza at school.

As an adult I did the bohemian diet and nutra system (lost 65 lbs with the two combined) and ended up in the hospital having gall bladder surgery (they say because of the sudden weight loss - about two months).

I then spent 7 years indulging myself and not caring about numbers, scales or what size I wore.

2 years ago when my weight started affecting my way of life, I tried Atkins (until I read the book and figured out how unhealthy it truly was). I then customized my own diet for two months (protein shake for breakfast, soup for lunch, dinner of a broiled meat and done steamed veggie) and lost 25 lbs.

I then started hypnosis and my meals were balanced (kind of like the ZONE but not as strict) and I ate no bread, pasta or rice for over a year. In 12 months with the hypnosis and no bad carb diet I lost 130lbs.

Slowly all the habits started coming back when I stopped hypnosis (a burger here, a lasagna there) so I recently went back to hypnosis therapy and started the SBD - hopefully the two will instill the good eating habits so deep that I wont ever go back to the old ones
