There is nothing wrong with your HbA1c test. It could have been the sugar substitute that you were eating. The A1c gives an average of what the bg's have been running for the past 2-3 months. It will probably be lower when you go back for your next test. Don't worry about it now, that will only cause bg's to go up. My A1c is never the same, sometimes higher, sometimes lower. I'm not really worried about it, since I can easily lower it by being as vigilant as I used to be. I was thinking that my A1c might have been higher because of Thanksgiving. Oh, BTW, Christmas was great! Since everybody works different shifts, we had to work around it by having our Christmas dinner at 10 pm on Christmas Eve. Two hours later my bg was only 104. Since it was so good, I had a second serving of dessert...but it was sugar-free pudding, with lite whipped cream and some other stuff like nuts and graham crackers. I wish I had thought to point out to my doc how good all my readings were about that time. I thought I'd have trouble and it surprised even me! I was so proud of myself!! (she says with modesty)!! Guest guest
umm... Jeannie? 6.1 is NOT bad for a Hgb A1C!! anything under 7 is good, though under 6 is better. But you should not beat yourself up over a 6.1. I've said before and I'll say again - just for me... I think we go to the extreme on some of this stuff, and we just have to do the best we can. For me, I know losing weight and exercising are going to be the key, and the numbers will come down. Just saw that number in passing and had to say something and pat you on the back! Guest guest
<<What is TIA?>> Shirley, it stands for Transient Ischemic Attack. It's like a small stroke. Well, not really. It's a temporary blockage of an artery. But it can be a warning for a REAL stroke on the way. I had one before my stroke, too...I had a bad dizzy spell (another symptom) in a mall and I've regretted ignoring it ever since. The very idea of it happening again scares me to death! I just panicked at the idea of the doctor RAISING my medicine, when I have a lot of readings in the 50s & 60s! But I think I mentioned that I have to use a county hospital clinic (where the medical care is atrocious) and the docs are always quick to give medicine. Patients have little or no input into their own medical care. It's not like they can just go elsewhere if they're unhappy. Oh, this is funny...my doctor's name is " Feree " ! You know, like " scott-free " ?? Guest guest
Jeannie one week of high glucose is unlikely to affect HbA1c too much maybe by 0.2% if that. Stress raises BP too. However well done on lower chol. and weight loss. Terrific. Hope you are feeling better. BTW, are you on aspirin? Take care Fenella

BTW, are you on aspirin?>> Fenella, I'm taking 200/25 FR (whatever that means...it says that on the bottle) twice a day of Dipyridamole. The doc didn't seem too worried. I'm concerned about my bg, though. Yesterday, I didn't eat like I should, but I ate a hamburger with mustard about 8:30 pm. Two hours later, I was 167. I guess hamburgers are another no-no! I've already had to give up frozen burritos and frozen pizza. Anyway, I took my meds at 10:30, but I happened to be up at 2 am and checked my numbers again. My bg was down to 55! I'm worried that I'm going too low, especially after taking my medicine. It's always in the 50-60 range before lunch, too. And the doc thought for a moment about RAISING my dose, because my H1 was a little higher (by only a few points) than last time. I imagine confidence and trust in your doctor is important, but it's so hard to have that when I must use a county clinic and always question my health care. It's not like I can go elsewhere. I think I mentioned that I came close to a diabetic coma and it took another hospital to diagnose diabetes! Even though I'd sen my own doctor the week before and had been complaining for months. I think you're right...stress can affect numbers.
