Hello to all-

I live in smooth, leather soled shoes or moccasins. The smooth soles

enable me to Shuffle. Rubber or non-slip soles I find very difficult

because it means I have to lift my foot to take a step--I find that

difficult.

When we did some remodeling, we took up the carpet and exposed the

nice, smooth oak floors and we put down Pergo laminated floor in a

light, marble pattern in the kitchen, dining area. These are easy for

me to walk on with my smooth soles and the floors look very nice. I

have never had a problem with slipping.

that's my story on shoes.

Regards to all,

Ed Ames

, " ski skates " sound like they may be fun if the world was flat

but I have found out that there very few places that are flat. I would be

in a body cast in no time. With my new orthodox they have fixed my toe

drop, I walk much better and the person who is making my shoes is going

to build the toe area up so as to minimize the toe drop. Have a good day!

Hi !

I read your e-mail about shoes & just had to e-mail you back! I HATE shoes!

They are such a BIG problem for me. I haven't had a change in size tho.

Shoes can't be too

" rubbery " on the bottom 'cause then my feet stay in one place & the rest of

my body goes on!

I'm very hard on shoes because of my foot drop. And toes wear out very

quickly!

Shoes for me need to be " slick " on the bottom. Hard to find casual shoes

that are slick on the bottom!

What shoes have you been wearing?

I'm new to PLS Friends but not new to PLS. I've had it since 1991 but only

got a diagnosis in 1998.

I'll look forward to hearing from you. Take care. Beth Plourde

Hi everyone!

Thanks to everyone for all of their help on my questions about shoes! I

really appreciate everyone taking the time to answer me

Another question -- does everyone that wears AFO's still have a problem with

their toes hitting the ground?

Thanks again! Beth Plourde

Hi Beth,

Yep, we are identical twins! (at least when it comes

to shoes) I can't take the rubbery sole or gripper

soles either. I usually wear the SAS loafer as I can

slip it on easily and it is very comfy. I have black,

brown, bone and grey. I wear them all the time, with

socks, without. Let me know if you can't find them,

I'll try to find a phone number so you can locate a

store. But I do wear the toe part of the sole down

and after awhile (about a year) they look pretty bad

and have to be replaced. SAS doesn't have a website

but they are worth seeking a SAS store out. Have you

been to the PLS Awareness website?

Hi Beth,

The AFO keeps your foot from dropping so that is not a

problem. But do your homework on the type of AFO you

get. Mine are so bulky that I hardly ever use them

and I can't bend my foot to drive.

Maggie,

I have two AFO braces and don't wear them much because they do not bend at

the ankle and I don't like the idea of driving that way. Alan K. has one

that bends and he drives with it. Alan, can you jump in here?

Yes, my toes drag with the AFOs. When I first got them, there was considerable improvement, little toe drag. Now I've had them about two years, and due to my progression my toes are dragging again. Have to work hard to lift enough. Someone suggested saying "lift" with each step. It helps me. I only wear them when I'm going to walk a lot (mostly for work). Weekends are usually AFO free.

I wear leather soled shoes with rubber heals. Rubber soles make it more difficult to walk.

I'm getting a power-chair via my insurance company. My doc and outfitter fought hard to get me a really nice chair - http://www.permobilusa.com/products-c2kcorpus.htm. I'm having some breathing problems, so it includes tilt and recline to take the pressure off my stomach when I have discomfort. Should get it the next few weeks. Mostly for work and to be able to take my daughter places my limited walking prevents now. Next I have to get a van.

As I said, I've "progressed" (hate to use that word, "progress" and getting worse don't go together!) quite a bit recently. Still walking. Still working. Maxed out on Baclofen (120 mg), so now very slowly starting to add Zanaflex.

Sorry to ramble, but it has been a while since I've updated the group.

Mine are made from plastic or fiberglass. Lightweight, but I don't like wearing them. Without them could not work. They do not bend at the ankle much. Makes driving difficult, not impossible. I passed an exhaustive driving test (4 hours) wearing AFOs, with no problems. Because I brake with my left foot, my reaction times were better than some race car drivers (they said, not me).

Hi <

Thanks so much for your kind e-mail concerning shoes!! I really appreciate

all the help that everyone is giving me! I'll be sure to try the SAS. I used

to work with a woman that wore them so I won't have any trouble finding a

store.

Like everyone else, I am so hard on the toes of the shoes. I tried having

rubber toe plates put on where the most wear was. Worked GREAT except -

the plates wore down too, of course. So I had metal plates put on.

Disaster!! I made so much noise that the whole world heard me coming & I

also fell in them. NOT a good idea. Well, I tried. I still hate shoes!!!

Thanks again! Beth

Hi !

I know I just e-mailed you but forgot to mention the AFO's. I didn't know

that there was more than one kind. I guess the AFO's I had were the correct

ones 2 years ago. But now they aren't 'cause I still have foot drop with

them on. What do yours look like? Thanks again! Beth

Am the same way . The more shoes the worse it is I walk around in the

house with no shoes all the time just socks. I need rubber soles on the

shoes I do wear. I wear keds classic the old ones. If I wear a leather sole

I buy those rubber soles to prevent slipping. Everyone is

different...........Flora

My AFO's don't have any hinge action at the ankle,

thus my foot can't drop. There is a slight amount of

give at the ankle, but it is maybe 1/4 inch. I

recently found an AFO that really looks interesting.

It isn't as bulky as mine and I'd love to try them,

but you have to go to them to get fitted, and they are

pretty expensive. But then all afo's are expensive.

Here is the website:

, I am just the opposite. The weight of shoes

seems to drag my foot down. I walk pretty good

barefoot, but the more shoe I have the worse it gets.

I guess that is why I like slip on loafers.

Reply to --I, too, am better with shoes " on " than " off " . I have gotten

some serious bruising of my toes when I was barefoot and my toes caught on

them in the machine. When they are new, I have trouble because they often

get stuck. Now I just have my husband grind the treads off the new ones to

: I also get around better with shoes. I have always loved to run around the house barefoot but now my toes turn under, my ankles turn in somewhat, my balance is worse (even though I use a walker), and some slick surfaces seem to pull the skin away from my toenails. That last one is hard to understand unless it happens to you personally.

I have yet to find the perfect shoe because my needs keep changing. When in the movie brought up the question of shoes I sure related.

& Delores.....oh wow, without any shoes on I flop around like a

fish or maybe more closely resemble " EGOR " from enstien. <BG>

I, too, live in my Reeboks. and if I don't wear my AFO for some

reason, I wear a helpful ankle brace i found at WalMart. It keeps

that ankle from collapsing.

Beth, I think, mentioned her AFO not helping her drop foot any more.

Mine has a spring at the back of the ankle. I replace the spring

every 6 weeks or so and VOILA! it works like new again. the only

real problem I have with it now is that my leg is shrinking and

eventually I'll need a new brace made to fit my leg.

also, when I wear only the small ankle brace, my limp is so much

worse and I have little control over my leg and foot. so, I do wear

the AFO most of the time. my foot swells and gets quite red, though

after a day of being on my feet. then the AFO feels awful and I

can't wait to get it and my shoes off.

A couple of years ago I had such terrible itching on the roof of my

mouth and tongue. I went to my primary care doc and she said well,

geez, you've got allergies!!!! I started taking antihistamines and

I've not had the problem since. could it be that for some you?

Hi Everyone!!!

Shoes seem to be a hot topic right now & I thinkI started it!

I never wear shoes in the house. Can't wear tennis shoes anywhere at

anytime. They stick to the floor. One problem in not wearing shoes in the

house is - because of my foot drop I sometimes bend my toes backward on the

floor. OUCH!!!

I really hate shoes - I know I've said that before - I sound like a stuck

record. Sorry. Shopping for shoes is torture. And then finding a pair that

sort of work & having them wear down in no time because of foot drop, etc. A

lot of PLS'ers suggested SAS & I do plan to check them out.

My husband who has cerebellar atrophy HAS to have shoes that offer support.

Tennis shoes are best for him

Thanks to everyone for your help! I had asked about botox injections.

Anyone know

about them? Someone said they had used them for speech problems. Everyone

take care. Beth Plourde

Hi !

Thanks for the website address!! I will definitely check that out. I had no

idea that there were different kinds of AFO's. Mine are just solid plastic -

no hinge or spring!!! Thanks for your help! Beth

Hi !

Shoes or not...seems to be the topic of the day. A few years ago I was able

to walk barefooted around the house. But since then I must wear tie shoes

with a sole that glides...basically, worn out tennis shoes. When my legs

get tired, I tend to drag my foot and can fall. I would love to wear

loafers but I need firmer support. So our barefoot-days are over! You are

not alone!

To all who are writing about shoes:

I have found this to be fascinating. I cannot wear shoes with slick

soles. I will fall on my, well, I'll fall. I can wear leather shoes with

soles like a walking shoe. I can wear walking shoes. Because of my foot

size, I have problems finding any shoe that fits, though. Slip ons are

out. I can't find any that don't feel like they are falling off and that

causes me to walk very gingerly. I am not going to do that. However,

something I thought might be of interest to all is boat shoes. I have

had two pair, one slip ons, which I can no longer wear, and the other

were lightweight canvas. The soles are usually rubber or leather, but

they are flat with tiny grooves cut in a jagged pattern across the sole.

They helped keep from slipping on a wet sail boat and were very

comfortable to wear. Sperry is the major brand name I can remember, but

there are many others. If there is a Marine shop near you, you might

want to try them out. Some shoe stores around large bodies of water also

carry them. They do come in my size and fit very well.

Just a thought,

Mike Gray
