I saw Dr. Keane in April for a second opinion. I was very impressed. I

found him personable and easy to talk with. He spent more time with me than I

had ever anticipated. Depending upon your time table if you are considering

meeting with him you may want to call for an appointment soon. He told me that

he will be leaving Mass General in July. He is returning to Dublin, Ireland

permanently.

Just curious as to how you compiled your list?

Hi Wade,

Dr. Jie Cheng (who is on your list) is my doctor and I've been happy

with him. The other doctor on your list in the Houston area (Ali

Massumi) has only done a handful of ablations over the years. (I've

heard on the order of a dozen or so at most, so he may not be the

best choice for a 2nd opinion PVA.) Also, when I initially entered

this world, Dr. Massumi was extremely difficult to get ahold of and

never returned (him or anyone on his staff) any calls.

Dr Cuffe is a cardiologist, not an EP, although he does have an

excellent bedside manner. So, you can take him off of your list. His

office would refer you, most likely, to Dr Tristan Bahnsan in EP dept

at Duke. I was seen in the hospital by Dr Bahnsan (bedside manner is

lacking), but I do not know anything about his credentials and his

experience in PVA. Cheryl

Hi Wade - I saw Dr. Abedin's name on your list. His practice is in El Paso,

TX. Two of us from the group are his patients. I had an ablation three years

ago. The other patient is on medication. Dr. Abedin trained at the Cleveland

Clinic. He is the ONLY doctor in El Paso(a city of 750,00) who does ablations

and

so he gets plenty of practice. My daughter is an emergency room doctor and

has had considerable contact with him. She believes him to be very, very

experience and successful.

Hi Wade,

Dr. Cheng is a very good doctor and I've been pleased with him. I

know the " Houston a-fibbers " who have gone through ablations with him

like him a lot.

Dr. Cheng does a lot of research here in Houston and I believe writes

and speaks at numerous conferences. One of the biggest reasons he

joined Dr. Seger's group here in Houston is because Dr. Seger wanted

to change the scope of his practice from being more of a clinic group

to being more a research group. Dr. Cheng is playing a key role in

that effort.

Besides his MD, Dr. Cheng also has a PhD in Biomedical Engineering.

(its disgusting that someone can be that smart isn't it?) Dr. Cheng

said he got the PhD so that he could understand and perform proper

research.

Dr. Cheng also has an excellent bedside manner. Matter of fact, a

couple of weeks after my PVA, I had what was in all likelihood

a " silent migraine " that caused me to lose vision in half of one eye

for a brief time. (I'm fine by the way now.) I was afraid (not

knowing what was happening at the time) that I may have thrown some

kind of clot as a result of the PVA and was on the verge of having a

stroke. Dr. Cheng didn't know for sure what it was, but wanted to

err on the side of caution and as such wanted to check me for that

very thing. Anyway, this was at about 11:30pm, Dec 30th. Dr. Cheng

was actually still at work finishing up some paper he was writing and

told me to go directly to St. Luke's Hospital and that he would meet

me at the entrance to the ER. So, my wife drove us down there (about

30-45 minute drive from where I was living) and sure enough, Dr.

Cheng was literally waiting for us, standing outside in the cold at

the ER entrance. So, in short, he's very committed to his patient's

health.

I'm still experiencing lots of ectopics by the way. But all in all,

I am way better off than I was before the PVA. The most noticable

side effect that I'm still experiencing is a slightly elevated pulse

rate. Tends to stay in the upper 70's to upper 80's, whereas pre-PVA

it was in the 50's-60's. Can't remember all the technicalities of

Dr. Cheng's explanation, but he said this is something he's observed

and is exploring. He has a working theory on this, but I can't

remember everything he told me before.

Hope this helps.

Bruce

> Hi Wade, I am one of those fellow Houston a-fibbers, who has had 2

PVA's performed by Dr. Cheng, and I think he's one of the best, most

experienced EP's performing this procedure. In fact, he was at UCSF,

and still gets called back there to work on really " tough " cases.

His bedside manner is wonderful, he seems to really care, and is

very, very smart but not at all condescending. I am a really tough

case, and so far have had 12 spots ablated. He told me the last time

I saw him that he is working on a new, additional procedure which

targets the areas which maintain the a-fib, rather than the trigger

areas which have been targeting in the past.

Also, he is very willing to work patients in.

If you'd like more specific information about him and where to have

the PVA done if you do decide to go with him, please e-mail me

directly, and I will be happy to fill you in on my experiences.
