Guest guest
HI ROY AS IF YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH GOING ON. I SUFFER FROM SCIATICA QUITE OFTEN AND I DON'T HAVE PLS BUT A QUITE STRENUOUS JOB AT TIMES. MY DR TREATS IT WITH STEROIDS AND IT CLEARS RIGHT UP AS LOG AS IT KEEP MY NOSE CLEAN AND NOT DECIDE THAT I'M NOT REALLY SUPER WOMAN AND CAN NO LONGER DO THE LIFTING AND PULLING I USE TO DO 20 YEARS AGO. TAKE IT TO YOUR MEDICAL DR. AND SEE WHAT HE OR SHE HAS TO SAY. SCIATICA IS QUITE A TREATABLE CONDITION AND THE TREATMENT ONLY LASTS A FEW DAYS. GOOD LUCK. Guest guest
Hi Roy, Or should I say " Hot Stuff " ? Been there, done that. It's been prabably four, four and a half years ago that I started with that. It is what first sent me to a recliner to get some sleep. Mine was all on my left side and got really bad. Went from my butt cheek down the back of my leg almost to my knee. I never even bothered the doctor with it. Figured I'd just hear the same ole' song. When it was at it's evil worst, I would take a couple of Advil. That took the edge off but it never fixed it. I even went to the chiropractor for several treatments which seemed to help a little. I think it was/is sciatica. I don't know if there is a good treatment for it. Eventually, it seemed to settle down and went away.About two years ago it came back and was almost constant for a year or so. Now I only notice it occassionally. Usually, when I sit too long at the computer. That probably wasn't much help. I hope you find a better solution. I don't like doctors so I usually tough things out. So far it has been as good a solution as any that the doctor suggested and much less expensive. Guest guest
Roy, I am so sorry to hear about your pain. Have you tried heat packs, ice packs, or chiropractic medicine? I also had buttock pain for awhile, and my Internal Med physician suggested Capsaicin cream. I don't know if I have spelled it right, but it is a pain cream. You have to be very careful with it and do not get it near your eyes. One of the basics of it is hot peppers. It does provide some relief. Hopefully, someone somewhere can help you. Take care, and keep the faith, Laurel Intolerable pain > Dear Friends, > > I need your help. > > I have written previously (quite awhile ago) about pain in my buttocks. Guest guest
--Roy, I agree with Ronnie it sounds like Sciatica to me too. I have it once in a while. I just went to my Chiropractor and it doesn't hurt today. The Drs. should be able to diagnose Sciatic pain? Guest guest
Roy, I've had that burning pain in my buttocks REALLY bad about 2 years ago. Just reading your letter has me squirming in my chair again. When it was really bad my doctor had me try Amitriptyline (an antidepressant) for the neuropathy. It helped to make it "almost tolerable" vs "unbearable", however didn't solve the problem. I found that I had to change to a different chair when the pain got intolerable, or sit on the floor, or use different pillows to sit on (to apply different pressure points). I would do this continually throughout the day. Then Carolyn Myrick wrote the following message to PLS-Friends (archive # 4673) in welcoming Pat Niehaus to the group: >> ---Welcome Pat, you will get allot from this group, so far >> everything you mentioned some of us have. I was just in >> physical therapy to help my piriformis muscle, I have the >> same symptoms there that you do. It seems you just have >> to keep it stretched out. Be sure before you stretch it you >> have taken a bath or shower to get it warmed up. One >> stretch is to lay on your back on the floor and pull your leg >> up to your chest and toward opposite shoulder and be sure >> you ice that area after you stretch it for about 20 min., you >> may ask your Dr. to put you into Physical Therapy for >> awhile ad they would treat you and show you some >> exercises. Carolyn Anyway, I wish I had learned about that much earlier because I had a sciatic nerve flare-up in my left leg that caused me extreme pain for 6 months before Carolyn wrote her message. My doctors were telling me that my sciatica was unrelated to my PLS, but it was because when I tried Carolyn's stretch I could feel the tightness in the piriformis muscle in the buttocks and after a few days my sciatic pain disappeared, and the burning buttock pain greatly improved too. I continue to keep the piriformis muscle stretched out so that it doesn't pinch the sciatic nerve again and it also seems to keep the burning buttocks under control somewhat too -- the intensity of the burning is much much less and I can sit for hours at a time without thinking about it. Since others were saying they thought your pain was related to sciatica, I thought I'd re-mention the stretching exercise for the piriformis muscle. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Roy, I've had a similar pain lately although nothing like the intensity of what you describe. For me, it accompanied a raise in baclofen level. That made me think that it may be caused by making a muscle work harder than it is used to without the artificial support of heightened spasticity. You might try a slight decrease in the baclofen level and see if that helps. Guest guest
Hi Roy, I, too, have been suffering for a long, long time with neuropathic pain. My left hip and lower back are excruciating, as are the soles of my feet (they burn). Nothing helps completely. I use ice packs to numb the area and reduce inflammation--even on the soles of my feet. Alternately, I use the heating pad on my hip and low back. As for pain medications, I've tried Vioxx, Celebrex, tylenol, and Advil (ibuprofen) without much relief. Most recently, I've felt that Aleve (naprosyn sodium) has helped somewhat. I take two of the 220 over the counter tablets. My pain NEVER goes away. At the best it is only 2 or 3 on the pain scale, and is frequently 9 or 10. It does wear me down. I am sorry that you are in pain. I can sympathize with you, sincerely. Guest guest
-Lyndal, thanks for remembering what I said about the piriformis muscle. I should of mentioned that, but my brain must be gone. I don't stretch as much as I should. I'm glad it has helped you. It really was tight at one time. It hurts to stretch it, but you just have to start out easy. Thanks again for remembering. Guest guest
Roy, I was going to say basically the same thing Lyndal said about stretching the piriformis muscle. A physical therapist showed me how to do this about a year ago. I sure wish I'd known about that before as I've spent months at a time in pain because of the pain in my buttock area. Now I do the stretch and go see the p.t. for myofacial release. That helps alot, ask your P.T. to try it. ===== Thomson, Solana Beach, CA www.geocities.com/mdmfoo/pls.html __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi Roy and everyone else who is a pain in the butt.......oops, I mean *HAVE* pain in the butt! LOL sorry, I'm in a silly mood today.....could be too many drugs? LOL anyways, this pain so many have talked about.....i have been having increasing pain in *that* area, but not what you all are describing. I have lived with occasional sciatic pain for most of my life....this pain is different and in a different spot.........please bear with me while i try to describe it in " tactful " terms since i have no clue what the proper medical terms are for these places! this pain is in the lower part of my behind....the bones on/under each " cheek " that you actually SIT on. Geez, this is embarrassing! I looked up a skeleton online and i think it's called the " ramis " ...or somethjing like that. it is also becoming intolerable.......it screams when I drive and I've had to stop and get out and walk around, but as soon as get back in and sit down it's just as bad. i have to constantly switch chairs around the house to try to ease it. anyone else have a painful " ramis " ? I'm also wondering if all of this is part if a hip problem I've been having. my right side is my weak side. twice i have been getting into my car and " left " hip seemed to give out or collapse and down I went with *ME* half in and half out of the car. anyone else have this happen? maggie

Guest guest
Maggie, I do have the pain you describe also. But the pain I was talking about is more generalized ... over the cheek area and the tops of the back of my legs. And it's best described as a burning sensation ... the other (what you're talking about) just plain hurts! Guest guest
Regarding the hip pain, my hip frequently " gives out " when that pain " grabs " me. It also makes a blood curdling cracking noise--often a series of 5 or 6 cracks as I am bending or sitting down. Guest guest
I have those tender spots all over my body. They are trigger points or Points which are a part of fibromyalgia. That's a whole different disease, but can be treated by PT, anti-depressant meds, and cortisone injections. Don't assume that everything you have is a part of PLS. Unfortunately, we can also get other diseases, as well.
