Lesley,

I too had a traumatic life event that happened about a year before

diagnosis, and started feeling poorly about 3 months after that, for the

larger part of the year. Did that cause the cancer? I don't know. It is

certainly possible: stress *does* hamper the immune system.

I've decided that, while knowing how our mental states effect our

physical states would be very interesting, it is in the end unnecessary:

we all know that poor stress management makes one miserable, which is

the only reason in the world you need to justify dealing with stress in

the best way possible.

I had to write and contribute my own story to this letter. I am a newbie and

am grateful for the info that I have started to gain from this site.

I had a few tramatic events in my life and one before the cancer surfaced. I do

personally believe that stress is a contributing factor. I was diagnosed in

July of 2000, after my first surgery, had a second surgery in Sept. and RAI in

November. Life has been a big ball of stress ever since and I am afraid that

this will inhibit my ability to fight this disease. After having this condition

or any condition, how do you eliminate the stess. I do not think that I can

work enough hours to allievate it. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me

know.

I had a severe amount of stress for about 2 years prior to diagnosis. I've

often wondered if this was a cause. By the time was diagnosed I had rid

myself of all of the stress (moved to a new city, new job, new friends, new

relationship) and I was truly at peace with myself and happy. I have never

looked back. When I found out about the cancer I was at a point where I was

so happy and confident that I refused to allow the diagnosis to bring me

down, I kept a totally positive attitude throughout the whole ordeal. It is

now 2 years post surgeries & RAI and for me thyca is just a minor

inconvenience!!! Every day I remember the words I told myself each day

during the bad times " the new life fairy is not going to come knock on my

door, if I want things to change I must change them myself " .

Best wishes to you,

This may be way out in left field but in my gut I think a contributing

factor to my thyca was being on a diet for 5 years that included ZERO

dietary fat (except for unavoidable traces).

I had a tonsilectomy the same year I had my polyp removed from my larynx.

1973. There was a bill for radium on the larynx surgery but not on the tonsil

surgery. 20 years later-thyca.
