Prior to my TT, I had an ideal menstrual cycle. I was always on time (28 days),

had an extremely light period lasting no more than 3 days, and had little or no

cramping. NOW everything has changed!

Shortly after RAI I experienced the period-from-hell! It lasted more than 6

weeks and at times I thought I was hemorrhaging! Other Thycans on this board

told me that heavy periods were very common while hypo so I dealt with it and

looked forward to the time it would end. And it did….once my TSH levels began to

drop, my period became more regular and the amount lessened, although they’ve

never returned to the pre-TT state.

During the last two months (a year after my TT and almost supressed) my periods

have been very similar to yours (extremely heavy, long, and lots of clotting)

and remind me of the time immediately after my RAI. I haven't yet seen a doctor

(my app't is on the 29th) but I find it very difficult to believe this would not

be due to what we've been through. I have never had female troubles until now.

I am 42 and my tubes have been tied since I was 21. I've never been prone to

yeast infections or any other female maladies. Please feel free to write to my

personal address if you'd like to talk further. Let us know what you discover!

Hi Deb --

Although I am not yet suppressed, I am also no longer hypo. My TSH levels still

hover between .3-.6 which should not put me in the " severely hypo " category.

Prior to my TT my TSH levels ran about 4.0 and my period was fine. I believe

something else is going on here thus the doctor app't on the 29th... thanks for

replying!

this topic. Have you seen the most recent

Harvard Women's Health newsletter? they specifically identify very heavy

periods with cloting as being a possible side effect of hypothyroidism. It

has happened to me everytime I've been extremely hypo. It's not your

imagination but real and validated in this newletter and other medical

sources I'm sure. My does get better after I go into suppression.

Re: Female troubles??

Hi Deb,

Have you used Ibuprofen? If you know when your period is going to start try

taking 600mg 3x a day for a day or two before and the first few days of your

period (unless you have problems with ulcers or kidneys). Since the

bleeding and cramping is from prostaglandins taking an antiprostaglandin

(Ibuprofen, Naprosyn) before the pain begins is more effective than waiting

for your period to start.

I'm new to this group and have been unable to post yet (computer problems).

My name is and I am 36. Last January I had a TT for papillary with

follicular components. I have had 2 treatments 150mCi in March 2000 and

200mCi in October. My thyroglobulin is still 3.3 and I'm feeling

discouraged and worried about dying. I had a friend die of what was

probably thyroid cancer the summer before my diagnosis and another die of

colon cancer this Halloween (both in their 30's) so I am probably too

focused on death and would love to hear encouraging stories. It has been a

weird course for me. With my October 2mCi dose my scan didn't show cancer,

but after the 200mCi dose mets showed up in my sternum. After that I

developed antibodies to thyroglobulin but they have now cleared. I live in

Seattle and if there are other people in this area please let me know.

600mg seems a lot to me without specific medical advice.

Actually Ian, my GYN routinely prescribes 600 mg 3 times per day for

menstrual cramps and heavy bleeding and it WORKS!

Sorry to imply that I was treating her. I had thought she was getting

advice from her own doc. There are many women who have dysmenorrhea

(painful periods), myself included, and I frequently prescribe 600mg of

Ibuprofen 3x day (I'm a nurse practitioner). I just wanted to point out for

most women Ibuprofen is far more effective than Tylenol.
