Assistive technology for kids

Where to go for help

iCan News Service

Assistive technologycan help parents and caregivers encourage the

growth and development of the child(ren) they love. By matching the AT

products that best meet your child's needs and challenges, you can ensure

his

or her full participation and inclusion in the world. To help you empower

your child, a number of specially trained professionals are available to

offer their knowledge, insight and support:

* Physiatrists are doctors who specialize in rehabilitation medicine. They

can discuss medical treatments and identify appropriate assistive devices

and

technology.

* Occupational Therapists (OT's) are clinical specialists who can evaluate

a child's unique needs and help maintain and/or restore his or her abilities

to function at home, school, community, or while at play. OT's recommend

assistive technology to improve and/or maintain the quality of life for the

child and caregiver(s) involved. OT's also recommend modifications for the

home or classroom environments to ensure optimal safety and independence.

This often results in a heightened learning experience for the child.

* Rehabilitation Engineers design, test, develop, operate, and maintain

assistive technology products.

* Special Education Teachers help develop strategies to best meet a

child's

specific learning needs and interests. They make recommendations, provide

resources for parents and caregivers, and make referrals to other

professionals when appropriate.

* Social Workers provide a wide range of information on community

resources, funding sources, insurance benefits, counseling, as well as

referrals to other professionals and service providers.

* Speech Language Pathologists/Audiologists are clinical professionals who

specialize in speech, language, and hearing impairments. They perform

evaluations and make recommendations for AT products that enable children to

maintain or increase communication skills.
