Since part of this thread has veered onto the subject on alcohol, I

thought I would offer up some tasting notes on a few inexpensive

*gems* I found during the holidays.

Since I recently renewed a friendship with a someone who actually

works in the wine business, and has a fantastic palate, I hope to

offer stuff like this on a regular basis. He has one of the best

palates around, and while he has told his customers that he thinks I

have one of the best palates in the city, I pale in comparison to him.

Plus he tastes new stuff all the time as a part of his business. Me,

I'm just a hobbyist.

## Ten Mile - this California wine contains Petite Sirah, Zinfandel,

Barbera, Malbec, and Carignane. It is a very tasty red blend packed

with black fruit flavors of black cherry, blackberry, black currant

and cocoa on a smooth finish. This is really good wine at any price,

but for $9.99 its a knockout.

## Brancott - an excellent Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. It is

rich and tasty with lots of citrus and tropical fruits. I got it for

$10

## 's Creek Brut Cuvee - this is what I had on New Years Eve.

This is really good stuff, a chardonnay/pinot noir combo. An

unbelievable bargain at $8.99.

## Liberty School Cabernet - This used to be the second label for

Caymus (http://www.caymus.com/), no longer, yet the wine is still a

knockout. If you find it I would buy a case of it (same for Ten Mile).

It is really quite good ($13.99)

Quick note: The 2003 and 2005 harvests were superb, and offer a lot of

good drinking for very reasonable prices.I can't believe some of the

stuff that is going for under $20 these days. Its fantastic. I used to

shrivel my nose at anything $10 or less, but no longer. There are some

really great values out there in this price range. Not just quaffing

wines but stuff that will stand up to wines 3 or 4 times the price.

Enjoy!
