I have known for years that my Mom was Bi-Polar, but as I started

looking into things farther. Searching for tips to help me deal with

her effectively I am convinced it is BPD. It is not confirmed from a

Dr. just my observations and how much I can relate to all of these

stories.

A little about my situation. I am 36 years old, single mom of 4

kids. I have lived alone in my home with my children for over 8

years, worked full time and had a Nanny. In December last year my

parents moved in next door to me. WOW - I had totally forgotten what

it was like. I am so mad at myself for not objecting, but as it is

now I am stuck.

My children and I still have pretty much daily contact with her, but

we do not discuss anything. Just hello, good-bye stuff. I have had

to coach them in the appropriate way to tell her that a subject is

out of bounds and to excuse themselves. I have also had to teach

them how to stick up for each other, because she has tendency to pick

her favorites and verbally assault the others. I guess we are just

lucky that they have had a healthy and normal childhood up until now,

so they see the problem is with Grandma and not with them. They seem

to cope with her behavior pretty well. Every once in a while she

goes nuts and we pull back to No Contact for a few days.

It bothers me that I let this happen, and now, unless I sell my

house, I am stuck dealing with it. I have learned alot in the last 6

months about why I am the way I am, and it makes me sad. It also

makes me determined to keep my kids at a safe emotional distance.

Anyway, I'm glad I found this forum, and I look forward to gaining

strength for the long journey ahead.
