Guest guest
Hello, While we do not have time to answer questions about goats, I can refer you to a book that answered all of our questions and then some when we started with our goat herd many years ago. " Natural Goat Care " by Pat COleby is by far our favorite and most used book on goats. She is a proponent of minerals, big-time. And she has hit the nail on the head every time we had an issue with our goats in the early years. Hope that helps, lisa@... - In , " gdawson6 " <gdawson6@...> wrote: > > Hi everyone, I am living on a Ranch that is basically a small commune > of artists/musicians and we have a herd of 15 goats and 5 newly born > kids that I am now in charge of. Guest guest
Did it tell you to have a lined up ready to zoom over as soon as any of your females come into heat and try to knock down the walls to find what they need? Guest guest
I don't know what the books say, but seems to me the best thing is to do what my dad used to do on his (cow) dairy farm - pen the babies up during the night and let them nurse first thing in the morning, then milk out what's left in each goat, then leave them together during the day. Do that for a few weeks until the babies are ready for solid food then separate them completely and keep all the milk. That way you get strong healthy babies for the next generation. All that milk replacement stuff causes diarrhea and malnutrition. Dad never had calf " scours " on the farm! --- In , " gdawson6 " <gdawson6@...> wrote: > > Hi everyone, I am living on a Ranch that is basically a small commune > of artists/musicians and we have a herd of 15 goats and 5 newly born > kids that I am now in charge of. Guest guest
Thank you for refering me to that book, I'm going to order a copy. Also thanks to anyone who has emailed me directly. Its really a dream come true to have access to such fresh raw goats milk and to be taking care of the mothers by myself. If anyone ever has daydreamed about living on a farm or ranch please find an opportunity and go for it! - > > > > Hi everyone, I am living on a Ranch that is basically a small commune > > of artists/musicians and we have a herd of 15 goats and 5 newly born > > kids that I am now in charge of.
