Hi carolann, and welcome,

I had an open, so I only know about that, but there are lots of people here

that can fill you in on the lap. My open was OK, I am not thrilled about the

scar, but after losing 160 lbs, who cares about a scar, right? I was in the

hospital for 4 days, came home on vicoden, and within a week simply felt like

I had a pulled muscle. I was on clear liquids for a while, as my doc is

conservative and felt the inside needed time to heal, which takes longer than

the outside.

I cant tell you not to be nervous, you would be nuts if you weren't, but

education is the best way to overcome that, and this is the place, first hand

information, some of which is better than the advice or lack of advice that

you may receive from your own doctor, especially in the area of nutrition ,

( personally, i think they leave that class out in med school, it may only be

an elective).

There are great people here to help you and support you, so ask questions,

post often, and get involved, believe me, it helped me enormously.

I had mine lap with Dr. Hargroder in Baton Rouge Louisiana through Images.

Honestly this was the easiest surgery and recovery of all the surgeries I have

had. Hysterectomy, appendix removed, tonsils, sinus surgery, bilateral

Occipital Neurectomy..... This one there was way less pain, and healed

quickly and without any complications. I am 2.5 weeks post op. I

specifically chose lap because of the previous surgeries, wounds that opened,

and such......

Hello CarolAnn - welcome to our wonderful group. Have you been to

www.obesityhelp.com to research that doctor? They have a lot of patient input

there on the various surgeons. You'll surely find someone who's worked with

him. Lap versus Open is a big debate that can go either way. Some swear that

lap is the only way to go because you have 5 small incisions versus one big

incision. But I also have heard of more complications with lap surgery. Open

incisions take longer to heal, but the surgery goes more quickly, which means

being under a shorter amount of time. A lot depends on your surgeon and what he

is comfortable with. Good luck in researching your doctor and keep us posted as

to your progress.
