Hi Jim

Still in the preliminary part of the fact finding, today I went for a

ultra sound and I have yet to see my cardio doctor. So I'm not to

sure what is going on.

For most people that is really good; if you arealready very fit that may not be enough. Try itand see how it works for you - if you areexhausted when you are done you haveover-exercised; you should be pleasantly tired atthe end, and then in around 5 - 10 minutes youshould be re-energized.

As a long distance walker before doing SBD, the rule of thumb is that you should be able to talk comfortably and walk at the same time. You can also calcualte how much you walk by time. Say you have a route of 3 miles and do it in one hour - you'e walking one mile every 20 minutes which is fine..

I am curious how much, if any, exercise everyone does on SB. Is a brisk walk with the dog for approx. 30 minutes a day enough?

I walk between 3 and 5 miles 4 to 5 times a week. Great for the mind as well as the body.

I would say

any exercise is better than none! Doing something like this is a good way to

make sure you get started and are realistic with it. If you find you want to

lose weight more quickly or get more fit, after a couple of weeks perhaps add

an additional walk, increase the time you are walking, start doing light

aerobics, swimming, etc.

For most people that is really good; if you are

already very fit that may not be enough. Try it

and see how it works for you - if you are

exhausted when you are done you have

over-exercised; you should be pleasantly tired at

the end, and then in around 5 - 10 minutes you

should be re-energized.

I walk at lunchtime for about 20 minutes at work,

and 3 times a week I take the dogs for an

hour-plus walk/jog in addition (as I get lighter,

it gets easier to go faster AND longer <G>).

Plus a little yoga to for flexibility.

I was already doing this regimen before SB -

though not the jogging part of the doggy walk.

I'm planning on working weight-lifting back in,

once I figure out when I can squeeze it in.

I do kickboxing 2 x a week, yoga x a week, weight lifting 2 x a

week, running 3x a week, bicycle between 10 and 26 miles a week,

swimming 1 hr a week, and walking, walking, walking between 10,000

and 15,000 steps a day. Plus I hike and Rollerblade too.

Granted, I ride my bike to work, do yoga at lunch, visit the gym

after work, and am in training for my second triathlon, so my

exercise schedule is a bit heavy right now. But it's Summer!! :D

One question - with all the exercise, why in heaven's name would you need to belong to a South Beach Diet Group? Just curious :-)

Because like anythign else if you eat without exercising, your metabolism adjusts to the exercise and you can maintain your weight but not always lose. Thats why when people reach a plateau and dont lose they always suggest eating less and exercising differently.

LOL! well unfortunately when you do exercise that much, it's much easier to come home and eat an entire cheesecake, a whole plate of nachos, six pieces of fried chicken, 24 oz of Coke, a side of beef, the whole noodle bowl, etc etc.

Yes - on the days when I walked 20 miles I was ravenous eventhough we ate along the way and drank lots of water.

One would think I am skinny, no? But I have at least 30 lbs to lose,

and then we'll assess what my body looks like then.

Exercise alone is not enough. I exercise like a maniac, but was

still eating more calories than I burned off. If I didn't exercise

like I do, I'd probably weigh a lot more than 180.

Uh, I wasn't judging anyone! Someone was taking a poll on what kinds

of exercise people do and I responded. I don't care whether you

exercise or not. Just because I enjoy doing triathlons doesn't mean

I think everyone should do them. Honestly!

My sister has 12 to 15 year olds and she

has assigned them each a day to fix supper and a day to do the dishes. They do it because it’s the only

way they get money for all the activities they want to do – allowance. You might have a hard switch because the

kids probably are already getting the money for their activities without having

to do the work – but she has mostly foster kids, so it was a rough switch

for each of them as they were added to the family, too.

It’s an idea.

I will admit I don’t exercise that

often either. I have had severe tendonitis in my right tibial tendon since

February of this year. The only thing that I have been allowed to do without my

lovely boot until the last 3 weeks is to do strengthening exercises. I wish I

could do more, but I am limited on what I can do physically, so it will take me

a while longer to lose the weight also. Hopefully within the next couple of

months my doctor may allow me to do more, but until then I am not stressing

about it. When the good Lord is ready he will let me know.

I don't often find time for exercise either, but then I think we probably get alot anyway :-) I canned green beans today and when I was done I vegged out with a good book for awhile, but then I went out and planted a flower bed and watered some new plants, dead-headed the roses, took out the garbage and put a bunch of hooks up and hung some baskets in my basement kitchen. There is only 2 kinds of exercise that take the weight off faster for me than just plain everyday work and those are taking a brisk walk {at least 2 miles} and for the other I need hubby and he is working tonight. ;-) \

Joyce, it's a great idea, but I think mine are too old now. My 19 year old has had a year at university looking after herself, and so when I got home she was doing the ironing today - a special treat! But my 17 year old is lazy, and at the yelling stage, so it is far, far easier to do it myself than go through all the hassle of making her do it. I should have done things differently years ago, and I know it. About 12-13 when I upped her allowance should have been the time to make her work for it. Now I just have to live with the situation till she goes to university in a year or two and learns about real life, just like her sister did! But thanks for caring, anyway. - Caroline in the UK

I guess my brain is fried from the heat & humidity . I should have thought about the mall ! We have several and I see people walking all the time when I am in one . Thanks so much for your suggestion and also thanks for the bean suggestion . I need lots of those good ideas :) , and it is good to know how others are doing also !!

Good for you both for trying so hard!!

, that is an excellent suggestion. One of

the stores here (Shopko, kind of like a cheap

Target) is also a popular walking place.

To remedy the tiredness, try adding beans (or

more beans) to your diet. I found I get a lot of

energy from them, and I still get sluggish if I

don't have them every couple days at least.

I'm on phase 1 now also (day 7) and I was tired the first few days

too. Being on the east coast I walk infront of my tv at this time of

year to the Lesley Sansone " Walk Away the Pounds " videos and they

are really great. She does a 1,2,3 or 4 mile walk so you can choose

your level. I've just started up again so I've gone back to level 2

which takes 30mins.

Maybe you could check with your local library and see if they have

any copies, otherwise the videos retail at $6 in Target.
