Any natural ways to deter the critters? Garlic? Something else?>>

:When you are outside on your patio: set around several shallow basins of

water with a little " lemon dishwashing fluid " in them, then put a small amount

of

oil on the top. The mosquitoes come to the smell of the lemon liquid, and

drown in the oil/water

I make a " bug potion " with about 30 drops each of citronella oil,

ecalyptus oil and cedarwood oil in a base of about 1 cup of coconut

oil. This will last my family all summer at least. Just shake the

jar, open and apply a slathering. You may want to test it on a small

region of skin to be sure you have no sensitivities to the essential

oils first, though.

It is swampsville here right now, and we just got back from a 4 mile

jog on a heavily wooded trail. No bites reported thanks to the bug

potion.

Right now I'm using a homemade spray on the kids to keep off the deer

ticks and chiggers. It's working very wonderfully wrt those two pests.

My 7yo has spontaneously reported to me that the gnats have stopped

bothering him as well (they plague him particularly) and I'm not seeing

any mosquito bites despite having a " bog " on our " back 40 " and it being

a rather wet year.

If you're interested, I'll post the ingredients.

Would that be motor oil?

Or could this possibly be a good use for vegetable oil? :)

1/4 c olive oil

1 c hot water

1/8 c glycerine

25 drops patchouli (chiggers)

30 drops neem (ticks, mosquitoes)

This will need to be shaken up each time you spray it, but it is *very*

effective. My oldest son is a tick magnet, sporting 3 deer ticks last

year and one already this year. That's when I decided to get more

aggressive about it. Nothing since we started spraying.

I got some coconut-based lotion from Tropical Traditions when I made

my order for some yummy stuff.

I haven't tried it yet. We live in West Nile territory, backing to a

drainage culvert, so we usually head in the house at dusk.
