Q for lowcarb experts...

It seems like, following the reasoning we're all following, vegetarians would be

overweight and have diabetes. Obviously, that is not the case.

This is a question from my mother-in-law.

But a nice, open-for-discussion question.

She is impressed with the low-carb results and is getting ready to read Protein

Power and some other books...

Carbohydrate Addicts is a good one too. My sister (0verweight, insulin

resistant, not dm...yet) read both and said while she was glad she read

both, she liked the information in Protein Power best.

I'm smiling too! I have to agree with Vicki.

Atkins, Eades, etc are all books written to promote weight-loss. That's where

the big bucks are. Diabetes is mentioned sort of in passing for maybe a

chapter. Yes, their diets do help diabetics, but the books don't tell the

whole diabetes story by far.

To really learn the whole picture about diabetes, Bernstein's book is the

one, IMHO.

The New Diet Revolution and Protein Power do not mention gastroparesis?

Atkins has a book that is something about getting cured of disesase. I

left my at the doctor's office and I think that was God's will that

someone would pick it up and read it. It was my favorite book of all

time. And I think he talks about it, but I am going to get a new copy.

Anyway, I will confess that I haven't read Bernstein, but I will. But,

does Bernstein talk about getting off meds for type 2 so you can lose

weight, not just diabetes meds but anti-depressents ect.

I will agree that Bernstein is probably more informative about diabetes,

but what does he say about people like me that have to eat 10 carbs a

day?

Also, an interesting note on gastroparesis. When I was so so sick about

2 years ago. I had extreme gasto problems and I thought I had this. I

went to a digestive specialists. He had me on 2 ulcer meds and wanted to

do the tests in the hospital where they put the tube down you throat

and the other tube, well you know where they put that. You have to be

sedated etc.

I ask him about Atkins and he said absolutely not, not with any kind of

digestive problems, you will make yourself so much worse.

Well I read Atkins and I thought about it and decided he was the better

doctor. So I cancelled both tests and began the Atkins journey. Within 2

weeks all gastric problems were gone and have never reappeared.

Also when I read about gastroparesis, it scarred the living hell out of

me, more than getting my feet cut off. It really scarred me into doing

something.

Anyway keep the info coming. I am old, but not too old to learn.
