Hi. Do you have room here for a parent? My name is and my

daughter, Brittanie was dx'd with type 1 July 18th,2001. I also have

a 15 month old son who I pray will not be diabetic. My daughter is on

humalog and humalin. I am very frustrated because the last week or

two her blood sugars have been high. Her target is 80-240. Lately

they have been anywhere from 250 to 400! I just don't know what I'm

doing wrong. I have upped the insulin accordingly to lower sugars

when they are up there. We are following the dieticians plan and it

doesn't seem to be working anymore. Could my daughter be becoming

resistant to the fast acting insulin? It doesn't seem to be doing its

job. Whenever I call the endo they say " welcome to the world of

diabetes " ! That is not good enough for me. I do not want to outlive

my child. I know that these #'s are damaging to her body. It's been

keeping me awake at night. Thanks for letting me vent. We go in for

our 3 month check in March.

Hi, ...there may be some good answers here but I'd also suggest you join

the LC-D list...there's a person there, Ron Sebol, who is one of the most

knowledgeable laypeople about diabetes I know of and he can probably help

you with your daughter's control...he's done this for at least one other

mother I know of.

To join, send a message to

listserv@...

put a couple of periods or asterisks in the subject field. In the message

body simply say

Subscribe LC-Diabetes and then your true first name and your true last name.

For me, it wold be

Subscribe LC-Diabetes Vicki Abbott.

BTW, there's a lot of folks from this list who are there too. Good luck.

There are some who say there's no such thing as " brittle diabetes, " simply

diabetes that isn't well controlled. (Not saying I believe it, just

repeating it). Does she have any complications? What is her insulin regime?

Does she lowcarb? Vicki

stick around. Everyone is welcome here. This fall my sister is going to get a

puter and get on line. I can't wait to get her into the group. She is 54

(brittle since 7) and she is an RN. She will be quite a resource.

Welcome, . Please get and read Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution by

K. Bernstein. There is quite a bit of it online at

www.diabetes-normalsugars.com. I would also highly recommend that you join

the group at

LC-DIABETES@... This is a more technical group and has

two very experienced moms of type 1 kids, once of whom has actually worked

with Dr. Bernstein. The list moderator is extremely knowledgable and well

versed (albeit a bit on the technical side). This is a great support group,

so don't leave, but I feel you will get more informed advice on the other

list. Go first to Dr. Bernstein and the LC list. I think you can just send

the LC list an email and ask to join. If not, get back to me, and I'll give

you the moderator's email address. It's a little tricky.

I suspect your dietician's plan is the culprit, rather than your daughter

becoming resistant to the insulin. You might start by lowering her

carbohydrate intake, especially the high glycemic carbs

(www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm) like potatoes, pasta, rice, bread, cereal,

etc., which can spike blood sugar faster and higher even than plain sugar.

And if you're injecting the H when her blood sugar is high, rather than

dosing before a meal in a ratio of units to carbs eaten, this would be

another reason her sugars are running so high.

Glad you joined us. Hang in there. I'll bet you'll get it figured out!

Hi Vicki

gee I have no clue but I know she really works at the diet now. The third

husband was the trick he is a gourmet cook and has her motivated. When her kids

were little she had real bad times. Would be going down the road and pass out.

My parents were constantly rescueing her. Of coarse her worst times were before

meters so her motto is " 2 minutes to test adds a year to you life " . She got

TOTAL control with the advent of the meter.
