Guest guest
I'm new...Half of my thyroid(rt side) was surgically removed about 5 yr ago...recently reg family dr found lump on my left thyroid gland..sent me to get Ultrasound...it showed a lesion..then family dr ordered a Radioactive thyroid uptake scan. They scheduled it for 6weekslater..I originally thought " no problem and planned on working until day of test.I teach 2nd graders. But,last weekend(5th week no Thyroid med); I " wigged out " ...trembling head and rt hand and arm..dizzy,confused,crying,trouble talking(could barely make a sentence..stuttered and couldn't find what word I was trying to say, lower rt leg felt like I had after effects of a leg cramp...and I was cold.Since my dr office closed hubby took me to after hours clinic. That dr told me to camp out Mon. morning at my family dr office and insist they move my test date up ASAP..reg dr office drew blood and said I needed to wait till date of test...Now I'm waiting it out at home...most symptoms diminished now that I'm more rested. But each afternoon I become very antsy and feel like my abdomen is all crawly on the inside...not to mention the whole room appeared tilted. The tilt of rm only occured one afternoon.I have a buddy in Nuclear med at the " other " hospital..he said they only have patients wait about 2-4 weeks at the most. I need to stay at hospital I'm scheduled with due to insurance. We are a pretty descent sized city...so I would think that both hospitals would be up to speed as to current testing procedures. I read at the American cancer ass. website that this same test has a 1-2 week wait time to be off your med so that the " hypothyroid patient doesn't have to suffer needlessly " .. I feel used and abused...read this info to my family dr and they could only move me up by 1 day..Big Whoop!! I'm also frustrated as I seldom miss work..and now I'm just resting until time to go for this test. Any advice???...I now feel when the Ultrasound came back with report of a lesion that I should have had my family dr refer me straight on to my Endocrinolist in Little Rock, AR. I foolishly trusted and had faith that this was something we could handle locally and then if it showed something bad on the radio uptake scan then I would take it to my Little Rock thyroid dr. Has anyone gone through a similiar situation??My two kids are taking turns missing 1 day at a time from school in case I " wig out " again.I've waited too much now to turn back as I will get my uptake scan on Oct 4th...this coming Monday...Helpless in Searcy,AR. My hubby tells me to just enjoy my time off but I'm too keyed up to enjoy it. I have faith in God and the only consolation I have is that I feel this is all for a reason..Please e mail me back if you can advise or console me...Thank you... Guest guest
Not to be flippant. but, welcome to the club... Doctors can be soooo blasted lame when it comes to good thyroid care. The 6 weeks no med rule has to do with the half life of T4 in the body, that has been revised, but not all hospitals are adhering to that, just like the labs *sigh*. But if you are already tapped out... you need the tests now so that you can get going with either the surgery or meds or whatever needs to be done after the results are in.... I was in full blown thyroid storm with all kinds of hyper and they still were able to do an accurate scan on me, that was 15 years ago. It was a great picture too, the tech didn't move the monitor so it was facing me and I got to watch the stuff get sucked up... a perfectly shaped and blemish free gland.... the tech got his butt chewed for his mistake, I wasn't supposed to be able to see it. Shame on your doc for not understanding. Okay.. that's out of my system, sorry.... For now.. there isn't a whole lot you can do.. taking anything now may just going to skew the reference the doc is basing this on. What was your previous diagnosis, why did they remove the first lobe? For you to have bottomed out so quickly, hmmmm. What med were you on, what dose, and do you have copies of the labs to show us what they based your dosage on? I suspect that you were underdosed to have bottomed out so quickly. The shaking and other symptoms you describe.. it sounds like it MIGHT be adrenal.. that your adrenals are freaking due to insufficient thyroid hormone... it could also be that your remaining gland has stormed and what you are experience is thyroid storm. How is your appetite, weight (going up, down, steady)? Pulse, temperature? It's not easy to go through this stuff.. you want to be able to put all your faith in your doc and not worry about anything. But many of us have found that we get farther, faster, by being out own advocates, being aware of what is going on and letting the doc know that we are in this too, that we're not just going to sit back..... Oh geez...... You've got us... we're here to help with questions and to help you to understand, you're not alone, you've got the whole mob of us behind you... We're pretty good listeners, too... and if you just need a shoulder... there are plenty here.... or you can write to me or if you don't want to get everybody's shirts all soggy... Pick me if you're going to be doing a lot of yelling and screaming, my ears are still plugged up!!! *wink* Topper () topper2@...
