Guest guest Posted October 6, 2004 Report Share Posted October 6, 2004 I had my 11yos tested for thyroid, because he had had borderline/low blood work years ago and never been treated. I couldn't get him into my Dr. because he won't take anyone new. I took him to a pediatrician, because the only *good* thyroid doc near us is a 2 hour drive one way. I was hoping to avoid that. But, the nurse calls to say all his labs are normal. So, I ask what his TSH is..... 3.5 . I tell her that actually isn't normal, and she argues back with this nonsense about how specialists like endos have their own criteria for things like thyroid and diabetes and often have a stricter standard of normal health. HUH??? I explained to her that labs in other cities DO flag anything above 3 as being abnormal, at which point she tells me the doc will have to call me back. But, she pointed out (correctly so) that TSH is actually a pituitary hormone. But that his total T4 which measure thyroid hormone is totally normal, in fact in the low end of the range, which is even better (another HUH????). GGGGrrrrrr...................... Since the Dr. already reviewed this and proclaimed it normal, I probably don't stand a chance. Now, I have to take the time (I don't have) and money (I don't have) and go to SPokane to see a doc who knows what he's talking about. I am comfortable treating myself if necessary, but have any of you treated your children? Since I can't know how he feels (and he has speech and language issues which would make it hard for him to accurately explain it himself) and can't imagine trying to basal body temp him each morning and other things... I don't know how I could safely and accurately do that. But, would you all agree that a TSH of 3.5 and a total T4 in the low end of the range is NOT NORMAL for an 11 yo boy???? Guest guest Posted October 6, 2004 Report Share Posted October 6, 2004 Hi, Might I suggest, to confirm that this Doctor does prescribe Armour, that you call his office, talk with the Head nurse, write down her name and her reply to the question: " Does Dr.XXX prescribe Armour to Adults as well as to CHILDREN? " This way, if you do end up going to see him, if Dr. does not want to prescribe Armour, you may tell him that his Head/Charge nurse confirmed that he did.... Also, call around to some of the local pharmacies in his offices area and confirm with them that he has prescribed Armour in the past. Obviously you can not ask for details, you are just asking for confirmation that he does, to their knowledge, prescribe Armour. Again, write down the name of the Pharmacy Technician that you talk with as well as the name of the pharmacy. Good Luck!
