Guest guest
Hi, My name is and my husband was just diagnosed with Diabetes Type II today. This is not news to us as we have been getting poor results from blood tests since being denied life insurance on him last summer. But now it is official as the doctor has prescribed Glucophage and is having him test twice a day. I am quite concerned as his glucose levels were over 500 on the last test the doctor did last week. Tonight he did his own test for the first time and it was 480. I read that the target range for evening is supposed to be less than 180, boy are we ever off base! These numbers are scary since they are deemed to be so high! anyway, he is trying to make the big diet change, and we did just fine tonight as we got chinese carry out of meat and vegtables and plain white rice. He even bought diet soda. Mind you he is a soda addict, I think it has been his downfall. He has recently accidently lost all the weight he needed to, although he wasn't trying to (scary again) but at least being overweight is no longer an issue. My big question of the day is - what is he supposed to eat for breakfast tomorrow? I understand that it should consist mostly of protein and some fat as those have no bearing on the blood sugar levels. I thought about eggs, but with his cholesterol being in the 400's and next on the doctor's hit-list, that is certainly out. Then I thought how peanut butter is all protein and fat and good for the cholesterol, but then realized that there is a significant sugar content in it. Oatmeal is good for the cholesterol and has no sugar, but it is pure carbs as is any other cereal. Fruits are banned for the time being since his blood sugar is so high, and they are carbs too. He won't eat tuna, I suggested that, but already knew the answer. Breakfast meats are too fatty. I really am at a loss here. If I don't come up with an answer, he will have coffee for breakfast and that will be it til lunch. Since he is taking this medication, can he get low blood sugar problems like that, or is that really impossible given his current blood sugar numbers? It is a bit confusing to say the least. We believe that the blood sugar and the cholesterol are the only 2 issues for him. But they are both exceptionally high and I am worried. His blood pressure was normal and the doctor gave him a complete physical today, he had the lab work done last week so the doctor knew the results today. If anyone has any advise, please let me know. I am very concerend but equally puzzled as to what to do next. Thanks,
