Guest guest
*I would like to know if there are any high-carb people out there on this list?* *well since people who follow those lists... for the most part... don't last* * real long, and if they do they have lots of diabetic complications.. i'd* * gather that's why they are not on here posting * I realize I am taking parts of two posts but each is about the same thing . First I have had dm for 47 years. Have used exchange diet/ADA all that time. I have only 1 complication. Have had laser surgery on right eye. I have used insulin for all 47 years. Was only 4 when I was dx'd. I am a lurker because it seems that most of the people on this list are low carbers and when a high carber/ADA person does speak up they are immediately put down. I have learned a lot from this list and do not plan on unsubbing ,yet. My brother has had dm for 32 years and is also a high carber with only 1 eye complication. Maybe it is hereditary. I have been on the insulin pump for 2 years and find it much easier to handle bgs with the pump. I am not suggesting for everyone to get on the pump but my lifestyle loves it. I was taking 8 injections a day before I started it and am now injecting every 2-3 days. I do test bgs 8 times a day and my fingers get sore but it is well worth it. I tried the low carb way for about a week, but because I am not used to eating a lot of meats and high fat foods it made me sick. I am so used to doing the exchange way I really do not want to change. My AIC is at 6.0 and has been since I started the pump. I was at 7.0 -8.0 before the pump so exchange diets can't be killing all of us. I might also mention that I have had 2 children and suffered no complications during either pregnancy. Both are doing fine and I have 3 grandchildren. Neither child or grandchildren have dm. Please don't put down the ADA/exchangers. We are not " BAD " or " DEAD " people. It is the WOE that we have chosen. I am not putting down the low carbers either. That is the WOE that you have chosen. I hope I have not offended any one but just wanted to give you my side of the story. Donna P.S. You have all mentioned eating a lot of S.F Jello. Instead of using water to make the jello use flavored S.F drink (ie diet faygo, crystal light) .. I use diet redpop and strawberry jello. It gives it a much better taste. IMHO. Guest guest
I think the problem lies in the " one-size-fits-all " mindset for diabetes treatment that doctors, often depending on the ADA recommendations, make. BTW, I'm a type 1 who would have out-of-sight BGs if I followed the ADA exchange plan. At the very best, I'd be using probably four times the amount of insulin I am now using following a moderate carb diet. I'd rather go with the " small amounts/small mistakes " philosophy of Dr. Bernstein, smile. Vicki << For the most part, Type 2's cannot follow the ADA WOE and control their levels without medication. Guest guest
Hello djj2014@..., In reference to your comment: ð Please don't put down the ADA/exchangers. That is the WOE that you have chosen. when i said what i did about the higher carbers.... It was meant as a statement, not as a put down.... and not specifically for any one person, BTW i've noticed that almost every person who is eating the ADA diet, are taking medications, and insulin vs those who are eating low carb.... I prefer to stay med free.... for as long as possible...

Guest guest
Kim, I really appreciate your standing up for your way of eating. There are always going to be the self righteous, I'm afraid. Barb > I'm doing the ada thing and moderate carb and have lost 130 pounds > in a year doing it. Also am totally med free as of mid November. > There are also plenty of non-ada and low-carb people still doing > meds. Just the other side of the coin.
